What is omphilophobia?
The fear of belly buttons.
Thanks for asking. Ugh, they're just disgusting, they're so gross.
I'm really worried that mine's gonna open up and my insides might come out.
Be honest, if you hadn't heard the title of this episode, would you have been able to guess that this person was talking about a belly button?
She was a contestant on Family Feud Australia in 2017 and just hearing mention of the words belly button were enough to trigger her.
It might sound like an extreme reaction, but she's actually far from being the only person to have what's called omphilophobia.
You see, throughout history people's belly buttons were almost always concealed unless they were in the comfort of their own homes.
But these days seeing girls in crop tops is really common, especially in summer.
That's not great news for those with omphilophobia.
How do you explain this phobia then?
Omphilophobia is an example of what's called a specific phobia.
Verywellhealth .com says that a specific phobia is an excessive, disproportionate and ongoing fear of a specific person, activity, thing, place, animal or situation.
Like with other phobias, people who are triggered by seeing a belly button can experience physical symptoms linked to the anxiety it causes.
These can include an increased heart rate, increased blood pressure, sweating and even nausea.
For some people it's particularly difficult seeing someone touch their own belly button or someone else's.
Of course it's irrational and scientists have not yet unravelled the origin of this specific phobia or even more common ones like the fear of snakes or spiders.
However, they believe it results from a combination of biological factors like genetics, life events and personality traits.
Can it be managed? If you're afraid of seeing or touching belly buttons, rest assured that like all phobias, omphilophobia can be treated through cognitive and behavioural therapy by gradually exposing a person to the object of their fear, the aim is to desensitise them progressively, helping them control
their reactions and eliminating disabling symptoms.
In addition to gradual exposure, therapy may also consist of breathing and relaxation techniques and cognitive techniques focused on irrational anxious thoughts.
