What is King Charles' role in the Church of England?
Thanks for asking. Following the death of Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022, her son Prince Charles became King at the age of 73.
He inherited the many titles that his mother carried throughout her 70 year reign, one of which is the defender of the faith.
That refers to his role as the Supreme Governor of the Church of England.
Just below the monarch in the Church of England structure is its most senior cleric, the Archbishop of Canterbury.
That position has been held by Justin Welby since 2013.
In 2009 the Church of England stated it had over 26 million baptized members, accounting for nearly half the population of England.
It is also the mother church of the the International Anglican Communion, which has a presence around the world, in particular in Commonwealth countries like Canada, Australia and South Africa.
What powers does King Charles have through his title?
The British monarch's role as defender of the faith is mostly symbolic.
In practice, he has limited powers.
The monarch appoints all senior clergy in England, but that still comes from decisions made by an ecclesiastical commission and then transferred by the Prime Minister.
The King's signature does appear on the document approving appointments, but he doesn't make the choice himself.
Writing for the Conversation in September 2022, constitutional expert Dr Bob Morris commented on how Charles' relationship with faith is set to come into focus, with the role of religion in Britain having evolved significantly in the last 70 years.
Over 50 % of the country's population now have no religious affiliation, and 9 % of British residents are followers of non -Christian religions.
How was the Church of England born?
It started out as a political move back in the 16th century during the reign of King Henry VIII.
He decided to split from Rome after the Pope refused to annul his Catholic marriage to Catherine of Aragon.
Through the 1534 Act of Supremacy, King Henry abolished the Pope's authority and proclaimed himself Supreme Head of the English Church and Clergy.
What is the Church of England religion like?
The faith is often described as a middle ground between Catholicism and Protestantism.
Due to its history and practices, it has just two sacraments, baptism and the Eucharist, compared to Catholicism's seven.
But other common rites are also honoured as important.
The main Christian festivals are celebrated, including Easter, the Annunciation, Pentecost, All Saints and Christmas.
The churches themselves and mass celebrations are reminiscent of Catholic services, with a dash of Protestant sobriety.
Indeed, the Church of England does embrace several fundamental ideas behind the Protestant Reformation.
It's also more liberal than the Catholic Church. For example, married and gay priests are accepted, although in the latter case they have to take a vow of celibacy.
Since the 1990s the Church has allowed the ordination of women as priests and in 2014 its legislative body approved their ordination as bishops too.
