Terms Apply. What is the Golem Effect?
Thanks for asking. Not long ago on Do You Really Know, we talked about the Pygmalion Effect.
Well, today's subject is pretty much the exact opposite.
The Golem Effect is the idea that negative words or assumptions can influence it and transform those assumptions into reality.
It is another type of self -fulfilling prophecy which sees lower expectations lead to poorer performance and behaviour in individuals.
And just like the Pygmalion Effect, the term was also coined by Robert Rosenthal, this time in the 1982 paper after having conducted research along with Elisha Babad and Jacob Inbar, the name comes form Jewish folklore, and more specifically, the tale of the golem of Prague.
It permeates diverse aspects of our lives.
In education for example, teachers' perceptions of their students' abilities can impact their academic achievements.
For example, think about a student who's always labeled a troublemaker by teachers.
Over time, they might internalise that perception and start acting out, confirming the teachers expectations.
When educators harbor low expectations for certain students, it's more likely that a self -fulfilling prophecy of underperformance will follow.
Similarly in the workplace, employees who are underestimated by their supervisors might lose motivation, resulting in diminished productivity, and reinforcing the initial negative assumption.
It could be a boss saying, I just don't think you're ready for a leadership role, or this guy isn't very detail oriented, so don't expect this project to be flawless.
What about in relationships?
Imagine a romantic partnership where one partner holds a negative view of the other's skills or character, say they doubt that their partner can organise a creative surprise date, or manage money well.
The perception can end up being a self -fulfilling prophecy.
This feedback loop perpetuates negativity and can and ultimately erode the foundation of the partnership.
Friendships are not a wave, either.
A friend who constantly doubts another's capabilities can inadvertently hinder their growth and self -esteem.
Meanwhile within families, parents' beliefs about their children's potential can shape their development and choices." How can we overcome the Colum Effect, then?
Awareness is the first step.
Recognizing our biases and expectations is crucial in preventing them from becoming self -fulfilling prophecies.
In relationships communication is key.
Clear and honest dialogue helps dismantle misunderstandings and negative assumptions.
Fostering trust and positive expectations can create an environment where individuals feel empowered to exceed the limitations of low expectations.
In schools, teachers can strive to treat all students with equal respect and set high yet achievable expectations for each of them.
them. In the work place supervisors can provide regular feedback and recognition to motivate employees to rise above their perceived limitations.
In essence, the Golem Effect serves as a start reminder that our beliefs can significantly shape reality.
By actively challenging our assumptions, fostering open communication, and nurturing positive expectations, we can break free from the cycle of under -performance driven by low expectations.
There you have it. Now you know what the Golem Effect is.
