What is female Viagra?

It's been over two decades now since Viagra was first approved for use in 1998.
The little blue pill from Pfizer becoming the first oral treatment for erectile dysfunction.
Its use has steadily increased over the years, with the NHS reporting just under 3 million prescriptions in 2016, compared to 1 million in 2006.
Its success has led pharmaceutical companies to look for a female equivalent.
In 2015, the American Food and Drug Authority approved a pink pill called Flibanserin, marketed as Eddie, which became known as female Viagra.
The product is designed for premenopausal women whose libido is consistently low.
The medical term for such a condition is hypoactive sexual desire disorder.
Flibanserin is an antidepressant which raises the production of dopamine, a hormone which in turn enhances sexual desire.
Thus, a woman becomes more receptive to sexual stimuli from her partner.
During intercourse, the combined action of these hormones keeps the body stimulated.
Another FDA-approved option labelled as female Viagra is Vileze, an injectable drug which can be administered into the abdomen or thigh 45 minutes before sex.
While it contains Bremelanotide, a different molecule from Addi.
Both drugs target the brain and hormone system.
It's worth noting that, unlike their male equivalent, so-called female Viagra drugs don't act directly on the genitals.
They target the brain in order to stimulate libido, which makes sense given that female sexual desire is a complex phenomenon.
Let's cut to the chase then.
Does female Viagra really work?
According to the FDA, only 10 of women who took Addi felt a significant increase in their sexual satisfaction compared to those who had taken a placebo.
Some other effects were more conclusive though, like increased vaginal lubrification when taking it 1-2 hours before sex.
But that didn't necessarily translate to an increasing desire or pleasure.
As we mentioned earlier, female desire is more complex than male desire.
It's more psychological and multifactorial.
There are a lot of hormones in play like serotonin, testosterone and dopamine.
Furthermore, it involves stimulation of areas of the brain about which we don't yet know a lot.
What can be done to help women who want to boost their libido?
A drop in female libido may have psychological causes.
Getting into a routine and a lack of variety in the context of a relationship can easily make it difficult to get turned on.
Spicing things up with sexual experimentation or simply setting aside more time for intimacy may help within a relationship.
Other options include reputed natural aphrodisiacs like ginger or ginseng, so don't hesitate to add them to your diet.
And lifestyle changes like increased exercise or cutting down on tobacco and alcohol are recommended.
When the problem is related to hormones, it's worth consulting a medical professional to get treatment prescribed.
Bear in mind, neither Addi nor Valisi have been approved for use in the United Kingdom.
In most cases, it's more effective talking about the problem and finding the real cause rather than expecting a magic pill like female Viagra to fix it.
