What is erectile dysfunction?
Thanks for asking.
As many as 6 in 10 men have experienced erection problems over the course of their life, and that proportion has been on the rise in the last 15 years, according to a study released by IFOP in April 2019.
It's also known as impotence and it's a big health taboo among men.
Erectile dysfunction is often linked to cardiovascular risk factors, so it's important to consult a doctor if affected.
Furthermore, it can impact relationships, sometimes due to misunderstandings about the cause of the problem.
The good news is it can be addressed with lifestyle changes as we'll discuss in a minute.
How do erections actually work?
Let's take a quick lesson in male sexual anatomy.
Erections start out in the brain, beginning with sensory and mental stimulation.
They can't be controlled by willpower alone, just like digestion or salivation for example.
When sexually aroused, the arteries in the penis relax and open up, letting blood flow in.
There are actually two cylinder shaped chambers which run the length of the penis, known as the corpora cavernosa.
During arousal, blood stays trapped within them due to increased pressure.
The penis expands and maintains an erection.
There are a range of possible physical and psychological reasons.
A functioning erection relies on several points, the first of which is healthy arteries.
For example, diabetes sufferers may be prone to erection problems due to the negative impact of high sugar levels on the arteries.
The penis blood vessels may also narrow due to high blood pressure or high cholesterol.
Smoking can have an impact too, as the cavernous bodies of the penis need oxygen.
What about psychological or emotional factors?
Indeed, age, stress and even where you live can come into play.
Some studies have shown increased prevalence among urban dwellers compared to people living in rural areas.
Another important variable is screen addiction.
Finally, 90 of erectile dysfunction cases are linked to anxiety after an initial failure to get an erection during a sexual encounter.
Unfortunately, few men are inclined to see a doctor for such problems, with just one in four doing so, according to a 2013 study led by Dr Brian Helfand from the University of Chicago.
That may be due to the taboo nature of the subject and resulting embarrassment.
Ven Vira told a TED talk audience about his personal experience with ED back in 2019.
Let's listen to a short extract.
So I went to see a doctor.
I was mortified.
I was petrified.
But the doctor was so kind and understandable.
And he said, Ven, we see this all the time.
It's okay.
And right with these few words, so much has been lifted off my shoulders.
The impact of erectile dysfunction often leads to a number of complexes, which may result in some young men turning to substances like drugs, alcohol or products labeled as aphrodisiacs.
However, there are natural, ready-made solutions available, starting with regular exercise, following a balanced diet, quitting smoking and drinking less alcohol.
There you have it.
Now you know what erectile dysfunction is.
