What is coffee badging in the workplace?
Thanks for asking.
It doesn't take a genius to realise that the COVID-19 pandemic changed the relationship many white-collar employees have with work.
And that's particularly true when it comes to the subject of remote work, which some now see as a non-negotiable
And a lot of other employees have made it clear they don't want to return to full-time office life.
Nevertheless, many CEOs were keen to get their staff back into the office once the pandemic started to ease.
Some companies ended up coming to hybrid arrangements as a kind of compromise.
That's still not enough for some, though.
And it has led to signs of retaliation in the form of trends like quiet quitting or act your wage, which we've talked about in past episodes of Do You Really Know?
Today we're talking about coffee badging specifically, which is a kind of hack employees are using to fulfil office day mandates without actually spending too much time in the office.
What does the badge part mean?
It's actually an imaginary badge that you get for turning up to work in the office, like a stamp of approval or a gold star in school, if you like.
The coffee badging trend emerged in the United States and has been covered by many mainstream media outlets like Forbes, CNBC and Fox News.
It specifically refers to people coming in and doing the bare minimum that's required in order to meet their company's rules.
So they commute in, swipe their badge, grab a coffee and chat with colleagues they might not have seen for a while.
Okay, they might then work a little, but within a few hours they head home in time to beat rush hour and finish working from there.
A survey by video conferencing device manufacturer Owl Labs found that 58 of hybrid workers admitted to coffee badging.
Is it a positive thing then?
From an employee's point of view, avoiding a rush hour commute is a significant benefit.
Those who head home before lunchtime may also save money by not having to buy food close to their workplace.
Some observers have argued that coffee badging is a good way of gradually readjusting to office life.
Liz Villani is the founder of the Be Yourself at Work movement.
Talking to stylistcouk for a feature on coffee badging.
She said Hopefully this can be the first step to people reintegrating and coming to appreciate working in an office and then coming for four days of their own volition.
Are there any negatives to it?
Let's be honest.
If workers are doing it purely to tick the box of having been physically present in the office, there's a good chance they're not going to be very productive at their job on those days.
Appearing on Fox 5 New York's 5 o'clock news show, career expert Greg Giangrande had this to say.
If you're a coffee badger and you're only showing up for an hour or two, your employer is going to know that and I don't think they're going to accept that as showing up for the day for very long.
Depending on how open coffee badgers are about what they're doing, the practice could also be seen as a bit sneaky.
After all, it's hardly fair on those who make the effort of commuting in and then put in a proper shift too.
There you have it.
