What household products should I avoid?
Thanks for asking.
Cleaning is a bit like working out.
Getting started is the hardest part.
But once you're done, you feel great.
However, unlike exercise, cleaning isn't always good for your health, and the culprit is the very products we use.
Are household products actually dangerous?
Unfortunately, yes, both for us and the environment.
A 2021 study by Which looked at hundreds of everyday cleaning products sold in the UK.
They found that almost half contained potentially harmful chemicals.
Some of the worst offenders included multi-purpose cleaners, liquid detergents, fabric softeners and toilet blocks.
And don't assume pricier brands are any better.
Many still contain the same concerning ingredients.
Even labels like eco-friendly or for sensitive skin don't guarantee safety.
The only way to know for sure is to check the ingredients.
So what should you look out for?
Two of the biggest red flags are methylisoazoleone and benzisothiazoleone, both common preservatives that can trigger severe allergic reactions.
Some products also contain chemicals linked to reproductive issues and hormone disruption.
And then there's bleach.
It's a household staple used by millions across the UK, but it really shouldn't be.
Bleach is terrible for the environment and it's been linked to respiratory issues, especially when mixed with other cleaning agents.
How can I avoid buying harmful products?
Well, the good news is you don't need a chemistry degree to stay safe.
Instead of relying on buzzwords or packaging, look for trusted certifications like the EU Eco label, the one with the little green flower.
Products with this label are designed to limit harm to both you and the environment.
Many household cleaners like descalers, carpet shampoo and kitchen sprays contain chemicals like chlorine phosphates, volatile organic compounds and artificial fragrances.
These can contribute to indoor air pollution which, according to the UK's Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, can be up to five times worse than outdoor air.
So how can I clean safely?
First rule is ventilation.
Open your windows for at least 15 minutes in the morning and again in the evening every day.
If you're using cleaning products, keep the windows open throughout and for a while afterwards.
Secondly, keep it simple.
The fewer products you use, the better.
For dusting, a damp microfiber cloth does the trick.
For general cleaning.
Baking soda, white vinegar, black soap and citric acid can handle most household tasks.
While for tougher stains, potassium hydroxide or sodium percarbonate are solid alternatives to harsher chemicals.
You don't need a cupboard full of chemical-laden products to keep your home clean.
A few natural alternatives can do the job just as well and without the risks.
There you have it.
