What are the effects of a full moon on the body?
Thanks for asking.
May not have realized, but tomorrow sees the first full moon of 2024 and there are actually a whole host of popular beliefs associated with this occurrence.
For example, some people say that there are more births on evenings with a full moon.
Others believe that the moon has an influence on our sleep dreams, mood and even menstrual cycle for women.
The moon and its potential interactions with our bodies and health have been the subject of fantasy for centuries.
Now there are actually four main phases to the lunar calendar.
The new moon, the first quarter, the full moon and finally the last quarter.
The definition of a full moon is when the sun, earth and moon are all aligned, which happens roughly every 29 days.
The moon's supposed effects are said to be strongest at the end of the first quarter and approaching the full moon.
Let's delve deeper and separate the myths from the realities, starting with the question of sleep.
Can the full moon turn us all into insomniacs?
That's an interesting one.
Some studies have actually supported this belief, but they are highly contested.
For example, research published in the journal Sleep Medicine in 2014 showed that the phases of light sleep and wakefulness increase on full moon nights.
However, the researchers failed to take into account the age of participants in the study, which was based on only 33 subjects.
Bear in mind that age is a crucial factor in sleep quality.
Despite the limitations of that study, another analysis published in Science Advances in 2021 also claimed that the moon has an impact on sleep patterns.
It suggested that in the days leading up to a full moon, people go to sleep later in the evening and sleep for shorter periods of time.
To what extent do superstitions influence our perceptions?
There's definitely something to what you're saying, but there may also be some practical factors too.
Say there's a clear sky on the night of a full moon and your curtains aren't fully closed.
Your sleep may be somewhat disturbed, but that's down to the brightness really, rather than the moon itself.
It's fair to say though, that our traditions and beliefs are reinforced by powerful cognitive biases.
Some people remain committed to their beliefs, even in the face of evidence to the contrary.
There's absolutely nothing to back that up, just like the supposed effects of the moon on our psyche.
Another example is when people promote detox diets, claiming that the full moon has an impact on the body's fluids and toxin drainage.
Okay, so the moon does have an influence on Earth's gravitational pull.
Its lack of atmosphere and magnetic field affect tides.
However, they don't impact lakes or streams, for example, as those volumes of water are too small to be affected.
So obviously, the volume of fluids inside our bodies is also too small for the Moon to impact it.
There you have it!
Now you know what the effects of the full moon are on the body.
In under three minutes, we answer your questions and help you understand the true meaning behind the trends, concepts and acronyms that are making headlines.
