What do masculinists mean by soy boy?
Thanks for asking.
At first glance, it's a jab at men who don't eat meat, especially those who drink soy milk.
But pretty quickly, this term took on a political edge.
Today it's used by masculinists, men who advocate for male superiority or dominance, and far-right circles to mock men they see as too sensitive, too progressive, too woke.
In other words, not manly enough.
What's the term really mean?
The term gained traction around 2017 on the anonymous forum 4chan, an internet cesspool sometimes described as the garbage can of the web.
Several far-right and even white supremacist users have claimed to have coined it.
According to them, a soy boy is a straight man who's weak and effeminate with little testosterone.
He doesn't work out, thinks masculinity is bad and calls himself a feminist, just to sleep with women.
Apparently, he can't even make eye contact with other men.
But why soy?
Possibly from a rather overlooked 2008 Harvard study suggesting high soy consumption might reduce male fertility.
This study was never widely accepted in the scientific community, but it stuck in certain online circles that link food to masculinity.
And masculinists have long-tied virility to meat.
For many in these circles, real men eat meat and lots of it.
So a soy boy isn't just someone with a different diet.
He represents a man who doesn't fit the traditional masculine mould.
He's too gentle, too intellectual, too respectful.
Any real-life examples?
Yes.
During the pandemic, Republican Congressman Madison Cawthorn said left-wing men wore masks because they're soy boys.
And actor Timothee Chalamet is often mocked as one for simply being soft-looking or androgynous.
Is this the only insult in their playbook?
Not at all.
There's also cuck short for cuckold, which mocks men perceived as weak or submissive who are likely to get cheated on by their girlfriends but do nothing about it.
Or beta, the supposed opposite to the dominant alpha male.
There is a whole vocabulary designed to shame men who don't conform.
So next time you order a soy latte, make sure you're safe.
There you have it.
