What are primitive reflexes?
Thanks for asking. According to the UK Office for National Statistics, September 26th was the most popular day to be born over the last two decades.
That falls 39 weeks and two days after Christmas Day.
While we're talking about babies you should know that they're born with certain reflexes that result in involuntary movements.
These are called primitive reflexes and the movements happen automatically without the baby sending a message to their brain.
Such reflexes develop during the fetal period and indicate that the baby brain is functioning well.
What are some examples?
The moro -reflex is formed in the fetal period and stays with the baby for the first three months of their life.
When the newborn's head falls back they extend their arms and legs and then pull them back in.
It's a protective mechanism that prepares the baby for life on two feet and having to extend their arms to hold onto something when they fall.
Some of the other most common primitive reflexes among babies include sucking anything that touches their mouths, making swimming motions in water and grasping anything placed in the palm of their hands.
Oh yes, isn't it just the cutest when a baby grabs your finger!
It certainly is, but bear in mind primitive reflexes have a greater purpose than simply being cute.
They're part of human DNA because they help us to survive from the very first moments of our lives.
Primitive reflexes offer a lot of insight into human evolution and instinct.
They show how babies are programmed to respond to certain stimuli.
Do these reflexes remain with babies as they develop into children?
Actually they don't.
Newborn reflexes mostly disappear during the baby's first year of gradually transforming into voluntary movements.
Some begin to fade around the age of three or four months as the baby learns to control their movements and their brain develops.
Reflexes are used to check a baby's proper development.
The absence of some reflexes at birth or persistence of others over time may indicate certain problems such as a neurological condition or brain defect.
However there are some newborn reflexes which remain throughout our lives.
These include blinking, coughing, gagging and yawning for example.
There you have it. Now you know what primitive reflexes are.
