What are lucid dreams?
Thanks for asking.
Lucid dreams are dreams in which you become aware that you are dreaming while you're dreaming.
This means that you can recognise the events and characters in your dream are not real and that you are actually asleep in your bed.
Some people can even control their dreams to some extent and shape them according to their wishes.
Imagine being able to fly, visit exotic places or meet your favourite celebrities in your dreams.
But how do lucid dreams happen?
Well, scientists don't have a clear answer yet but they have some theories.
One of them is that lucid dreams are a hybrid state between sleep and wakefulness, where the brain is more active than usual during dreaming.
Lucid dreams usually occur during the REM stage of sleep, which is when most of our vivid emotional dreams happen.
REM stands for Rapid Eye Movement because our eyes move rapidly under our eyelids during this stage.
Lucid dreaming is not a common phenomena.
Studies suggest that about half of people have experienced at least one lucid dream in their lifetime, but only about 23 of people have them at least once a month.
It's also a skill that can be learned and improved with practice.
There are various techniques and methods that can help you induce lucid dreams, such as keeping a dream journal, performing reality checks or using external stimuli.
A dream sign is anything that makes you realise you're dreaming.
For example, if you dream that you're walking down your street with your dog, no dream sign.
But if suddenly Donald Trump appears riding a blue dragon...
You know it's a dream, says Charlie Morley, the author of Lucid Dreaming Made Easy.
But why would you want to have lucid dreams?
Although some people advise being cautious with lucid dreaming as it may affect your sleep quality, your ability to process information and even interfere with how we process emotion and memory, there have been studies showing real benefits of harnessing the power of lucid dreams.
For example, they can help you overcome your fears and anxieties and have been used successfully to support veterans suffering from PTSD, who are able to overcome their fears by confronting them in a safe dream environment.
A 2021 study by the Institute of Nautic Sciences in California found that after a week of veterans following a dream plan, 85 of participants were no longer suffering from PTSD.
Some also believe that you can use lucid dreams to enhance your creativity, problem-solving or motor skills by practising them in your dream world, or even use lucid dreams for spiritual exploration or personal growth.
Tree Carr, the author of Conscious Dreaming, who runs workshops at the Tate Modern, suggests you try telling yourself Tonight my dreams are going to give me a creative breakthrough, or other similar affirmations as you drift off to sleep.
