What are yellow flags in dating?
Thanks for asking. In recent years, dating has become a lot more structured.
Terms like green flags and red flags are now part of everyday language.
And the criteria for evaluating potential partners have become more specific and defined.
Of course, the main idea behind these colour codes is to help you figure out if someone is right for you, based on how they behave. But lately, even the flag system has become a little less straightforward, forward with the introduction of beige flags and yellow flags.
Now, beige flags refer to boring or insignificant traits, while yellow flags can have a more meaningful impact on a relationship.
So are they good or bad, then?
It's fair to say that they sit somewhere between red and green.
They don't necessarily mean you should walk away and assume your partner is toxic.
Still, they're worth paying attention to, And a feature published in the New York Times in July 2024 suggested that you should slow down if you see certain yellow flags.
Therapist Todd Barrett said that a yellow flag really means you need to communicate with the other person to establish what's going on.
What are some examples then?
One cited in the Times is when a person suggests that all their exes were crazy or horrible people.
It's pretty common so you may well have heard it before, and it might not seem like a big deal to start with.
After all, it's easy to feel sympathetic since ending up with a difficult partner can happen to anyone.
But still, you want to pay attention to how someone talks about their past relationships.
If they describe all their exes as terrible, it could be a sign that they're not taking responsibility for their own part in what went wrong.
Another one is when members of your inner circle don't approve of your new relationship.
You might not want to admit it to them, but friends and family often have good instincts about romantic partners.
If they have doubts about your relationship, don't just dismiss them.
It's worth stopping to consider why that is.
Psychotherapist Geoff Gentha summed it up pretty well like this.
They might see something that you don't see because you're love -blind.
When you have rose -tinted glasses on, all the red flags look like flags.
How do yellow flags differ from red flags?
They certainly bear some resemblance, but it's important to remember that the way we categorise behaviours in relationships is subjective.
What one person sees as a problem might not bother someone else at all, The line between a yellow flag and a red flag can therefore be pretty thin at times.
