We wow on the weekend.
We wow on the weekend.
We wow on the weekend.
Because this is what we do on the weekend.
Oh, wait, no, I said laughing twice.
Uh, whatever.
Wee-wow on the weekend.
Yeah!
Wee-wow on the weekend.
Clap, clap!
Wee-wow on the weekend.
Because this is what we do on the weekend.
Hello and welcome to Wee-wow on the weekend.
I'm your host.
Dennis.
And that's Reggie, my co-host.
This is the show where we hang out in my mother's basement, listen to episodes of Tinkercast shows and answer questions from my devoted listeners.
So let's get to the first segment.
Reggie, should we do Q&A segment or reading reviewsies?
What?
You have an idea for a segment.
That's so exciting.
What is it?
Ooh.
The slumber segment.
What's that?
Okay, you get a pillow and a blanket.
Then what?
And then you lay down.
Then what?
And then you go to sleep.
Reggie, are you just trying to take a nap?
No, no naps.
We're in the middle of a show.
You can nap later.
Reggie, wake up.
We're not doing slumber segment.
No, we're going to do a kiss. segment.
The Q&A segment.
All right, let's just get the old answering machine pulled up here.
Okay, here we go.
Hi, you've reached Dennis from WeWow on the weekend.
That's me.
Do you have a question?
Well, I do too.
Lots of them.
And who's going to answer all my questions?
You?
Probably not.
But I guess I can answer yours.
Leave me a message.
Hey, Dennis.
My name is Theo, and I have a question for you.
Okay, go ahead, Theo.
What was the secret to growing your prize-winning azaleas?
P.S.
I think WeWow on the weekend is awesome.
Yay!
Thank you, Theo.
You are correct.
WeWow on the weekend is awesome.
And as for my prize-winning azaleas, obviously I water them and pull up weeds and make sure they get the right amount of sunlight.
But the real secret to prize-winning azaleas is... You have to gossip with them every day.
Yes, Reggie, every day.
If you whisper three secrets to them every day by 4 p.m., it makes their petals...
Brrrr!
Brrrr!
Brrrr!
But also sometimes I enter them in non-flower contests.
Yeah, last week they won a hot dog eating contest.
Reggie, they won because they're prize winning.
Next question.
Hi, Dennis.
My name is Micah and I live in Austin, Texas.
My question for you is what does baby Dennis think of flying a plane?
What does baby Dennis think of flying a plane?
Well, let's ask him.
Oh, baby Dennis. is over here, up on the shelf.
Oh, Baby Dennis, what are you doing on the shelf?
Didn't I leave you in a cardboard box?
Baby Dennis moves in mysterious ways.
Okay, don't love that.
Well, anyway, Baby Dennis, Micah has a question for you.
Oh, what is it, Micah?
What do you think of flying a plane?
Oh, Baby Dennis loves flying planes.
Really?
Yeah, Baby Dennis already has his license.
No, you don't.
Yes, baby.
Dennis does.
Okay.
Well, then fly me to Hawaii.
That will be $5,000.
What?
Oh, never mind.
Next question.
Hi, Dennis.
I'm Sophia from Wiley, Texas.
Hi, Sophia.
And I wanted to know if you put your left shoe on the wrong foot, is it technically on the right foot?
I'm confused on that one.
Okay, if you put your left shoe on the wrong foot, is it technically on the right foot?
Well, that's easy, Sophia.
Your shoe is not on the right foot because the left shoe is on the right foot.
Wait, your left shoe is on your right foot, which is the wrong foot, because it's your left shoe on your right foot which is.
Wrong?
Well, now I'm confused too, Sophia.
I think the answer is just to never wear shoes ever again.
Thanks for all your calls, everyone.
If you've got a question for me, call and leave me a message.
The number is 1-888-7-WOW-WOW.
That's 1-888-7-WOW-WOW.
I just might answer your question on Wee Wow on the weekend.
OK, that takes care of that.
Reggie, are you still awake?
Okay, good.
Next up is a little segment I like to call Inside Tinkercast Studios.
Ahem.
Inside Tinkercast Studios.
This is the part where we revisit an episode of one of my favorite Tinkercast shows.
And today we're listening to Wow in the World.
Season 2, Episode 28 called How to Sleep Your Way to Victory.
No, Reggie, stay awake, okay?
Okay, here we go.
And play.
WeeWow will be right back.

Nobody should abuse whole wheat flour! mansion this week.
Where is that coming from, Mindy?
I don't know.
Is it coming from Guy Raz's house?
Hmm.
Run, run, run, run, run, run.
Uh, hello?
Guy Raz?
That's not a necktie.
This is a necktie.
Guy Raz, wake up before you snore the whole You, sir, have insulted my honor.
What?
I challenge you to a thumb war.
Guy Raz!
Guy Raz!
This is never going to work.
Where's that emergency wake-up kit?
Here it is.
Smelling salts, a pail of water.
Air horn.
Perfect.
Sorry in advance, Guy Raz.
Where am I?
Is the queen okay?
Mindy, what are you doing in my room?
What time is it?
Ross, I came over here to wake you up.
Wake me up?
Mindy, this is the first decent night's sleep I've had all week.
Really?
Man, you should get into Remy.
He's a lifesaver.
Remy?
Who's Remy?
Remy, the sleep coach.
He's been helping me get ready for the big competition tomorrow.
The big competition?
What are you talking about? you forgot about it.
Uh... The annual NPR three-point basketball competition?
Oh, right.
Of course.
And it's all going down tomorrow at dawn.
And this Remy guy is supposedly going to help you with this?
Yeah, he says a few extra hours in bed every night can help me sleep my way to victory.
Well, that Does make sense.
Uh-huh.
And this year, I know I'll win.
I'm going to give that Ira Glass the fight of his American life.
And this guy, Remy, is he the one to help you do it?
Yeah.
I'm surprised you haven't heard of him yet.
He's all over TV.
Here, check it out.
Are you not as fast as you want to be?
Do you find yourself losing a Peabody Award winning journalists every single year?
That's oddly specific.
Shh, listen.
If that sounds familiar, then boy, do I have a solution for you.
Sleep Your Way to Victory Boot Camp.
Sleep Your Way to Victory Boot Camp?
That's right.
My Sleep Your Way to Victory Boot Camp will teach you the fundamentals of snoozing, dozing and napping.
All to make sure that you can achieve all of your journalistic and athletic goals.
Today!
Warning.
Oversleeping may result in cranky parents, missed school and comparisons to sloths, koalas and other generally lazy animals.
See, Guy Raz?
This is the guy who's been helping me get ready for the three-point competition.
And I gotta tell you, my sleep hygiene has never been better.
Sleep hygiene?
Yeah.
So sleep hygiene is really just a fancy-pants way of saying a Good night sleep.
So, I've been getting my eight hours, limiting my screen time before bed, and saying no to coffee.
The best part of waking up.
No coffee!
Uh-huh.
In fact, I was just getting ready to go see Remy for another session.
You want to come?
I don't know, Mindy.
It seems pretty late.
Okay, Zoodle, what's the time?
The time?
Also known as Morris Day and The Time, an American musical group that was formed in Minneapolis in 1981.
No, no, no, Zoodle.
What's the time now?
In Time, an American dystopian science fiction action thriller film starring Justin Timberlake.
No, no, no, no, no, no.
Zoodle.
Guy Raz, it's 8.30.
8.30?
Mindy, it's the middle of the night.
For you.
Well, when's a better time to practice sleeping than the middle of I guess that's true.
So you'll come?
Sure.
I mean, I couldn't hurt, right?
Let me just get my stuff together.
Posturpedic pillow, silk eye mask.
Mindy?
Yeah?
Could you pass me my dehumidifier and static noise generator?
Well, I think that's everything.
All right.
Let me just give Reggie a quick call.
Think you just got off of his goober shift.
He's driving for goober now.
Oh yeah, he needed the extra cash.
So you know tough times, i guess dial dial dial dial, dial.
It's ringing.
Oh hey reg, how's it going?
Great okay, so we need a favor.
I know, i know yeah, we just need a quick lift, not far surging Okay, fine.
Thanks, Reg.
See you soon.
He's on his way.
Perfect.
All right, can you help me carry all this stuff downstairs?
Yeah, sure thing, Guy Raz.
Wait, I almost forgot my nightcap.
Okay, there we go.
Now, oh, hey, Reggie.
Reggie, over here.
Nice wheels.
All right, Guy Raz.
Hop on in.
Wait, Reggie is driving a car for Goober?
Are you sure this car is safe?
Of course I'm not sure it's safe, Guy Raz.
Now get in.
Well, okay.
Seatbelts on.
I like to wear all of them.
Okay, Reg, we're going to need you to take us to the sleep gym.
It's on the corner of Broken Dreams Boulevard and Memory Lane.
I really don't think this is necessary.
Neither is breathing, Guy Raz, and you do that all day long.
You all strapped in?
I think so.
Good, because here we go and reg, remember to tip your driver, guy roz.
Okay reg, we gotta run or sleep.
You know what i mean.
Catch you later.
Well, here we are, guy roz, the sleep gym oh yeah, i can see the sign.
The sleep gym, plenty of rest so you can beat the best.
Huh, you ready as i'll ever be all right, let's go buddy.
Okay, you sleepyheads, are you ready for another set?
All right, you asked for it.
Now jump down and give me three cycles.
Cycles?
What is he talking about, Mindy?
Well, shh.
Sorry.
I think he's talking about sleep cycles.
You know, the different stages that your body goes through when you close your eyes?
Wait, you mean when I close my eyes and...
My body is still working out?
Yep, that's why sleep is so important, Guy Raz.
And my ticket to winning that three-point basketball competition.
I don't know, Mindy.
I mean, all these people, they don't even look like they're sleeping their way to anything.
Well, it might not look like they're doing anything, Guy Raz, but there's actually a lot of important work happening inside your body when you go to sleep.
Okay, stage one, here we go.
So what are these stages of sleep?
Okay, so stage one is called light sleep, where you can still drift in and out of consciousness.
Right, and consciousness is a scientific term for being aware of what's going on around you.
Yeah, so in this stage of sleep, it's still super easy to wake people up.
Like I said, it's still very easy to wake people up at this stage.
Your eyes kind of move slowly from side to side under your eyelids and your muscles start to slow down.
Right, so what's next?
Coming up next is stage two.
We're about to enter stage two.
Are you ready?
Because here we go.
In stage two, your eyes stop moving and your brainwaves start to slow down.
And brainwaves are basically a measurement of how active your brain is, right?
Right.
So in stage two your brainwaves slow down, your body temperature drops and your heart rate slows down as your body prepares for deep sleep.
Deep sleep?
Yep.
Stage 3.
Okay, everyone.
Let's get you into some deep sleep.
Oh, man.
I keep forgetting how loud deep sleep is, Guy Raz.
This must have been the stage you were in when I woke you up earlier.
You might be right, Mindy.
And in this stage of the sleep cycle, it's very hard to wake people up.
Tell me about it.
You had to bust out the emergency air horn.
And it's the stage where sleepwalking or sleep talking can happen.
Go on.
Okay, so these very slow brain waves are called delta waves.
And some scientists believe that when you're in this state of sleep, your body goes into a sort of full-on recovery mode, releasing hormones which, by the way, are the chemicals in your brain that help you grow big and strong.
Anywho, it starts repairing your immune system, your body's inner defense system, and organizing all of the learning you did that day into a long-term storage in your brain.
Huh, so that's it?
Well, not exactly.
So after you reach stage three, your body starts to come back down through stage two.
Okay, sleepyheads, let's bring it back.
Stage two.
And stage one.
And stage one.
Good work, everybody.
Now for the most important part.
Wait a minute.
There's more?
Yep.
After cycling through all the different stages of sleep, your body goes through one more stage before starting it all up again.
And what is it?
Here we go.
Get ready for it.
It's called... REM sleep.
R-E-M sleep?
You know it, Guy Raz.
During this phase between cycles, your breathing speeds up, Your heart rate goes up and so does your blood pressure.
And most importantly, your eyes begin to dart rapidly back and forth under your eyelids.
REM sleep stands for rapid eye movement sleep.
And so that's it?
That's the sleep cycle?
That's it.
And then it starts all over again.
All right.
Good work, everyone.
Now who's ready for one more?
Typically, a person will go through about four or five of these cycles a night, with each cycle lasting about 90 minutes or so.
That's so fascinating, Mindy, but... Oh, boy.
I think I'm going to see if I can catch a few Zs with this class before your big game.
Can you pass me that blanket over there?
Well, I still need to catch up on my sleep, too.
Okay.
Well, like I was saying earlier Mindy, it turns out that sleeping is super important when it comes to athletic performance.
Really?
Really.
Check out this video for this new study out of Stanford University in California.
Just wake me up when you're done, okay?
Okay, Roz, I'm not just going to... Ooh, popcorn!
Okay, let's see what this study is about.
There's fear on the tape, sleep, and athletic performance in basketball players.
Hey there, I'm Remy from the world famous Sleep Your Way to Victory Bootcamp.
Remy?
That's right.
Now, I know what you're thinking.
What's the science to back up all this news and success?
That is what I was thinking.
Well, lucky for you, my good friend, Guy Paz...
Thank you, but it's actually Roz.
Whatever.
My good friend Guy Raz will explain to you why you need my program, Mr. Gaz.
Well, hey there, sleepyheads.
Guy Raz, what are you doing in this video?
A group of scientists from Stanford University wanted to see what effect sleep had on basketball players.
So the first thing they did was to get a bunch of basketball players, on their regular amount of sleep to perform a bunch of drills like sprinting, shooting and reaction time.
Yeah, and then?
And then the scientists measured how well these athletes performed doing the same tasks, but with an extra few hours of bed rest.
And what did they find?
They found that the athletes had faster sprint times.
Their basketball shooting accuracy had improved by 9 from the free throw line and 92 when shooting three-pointers.
And the players showed much faster reaction times.
Think fast!
Ouch!
What?
Looks like this guy needs a couple more cycles.
Hey, join us next week when we... Okay, that's enough of you.
Thank you very much.
Right.
Now what?
Hey, look.
The sunrise.
The three-point basketball competition!
Guy Raz!
Guy Raz, wake up!
It's dawn!
We're gonna miss the competition!
Come on!
Where am I?
We're at the sleep gym, but that's enough snoozing for you, buddy.
We've got a basketball game to win.
A basketball game?
Oh, yeah, the NPR three-point shootout.
Sorry.
Yeah, and we better get a move on it if we want to make it there in time.
The court's just next door.
Come on.
Well, that's awfully convenient.
Okay, now I think it's right down this hall here.
Hey, by the way, I never knew you did videos for the sleep gym.
Well, I tried to tell you, Mindy, but you kept cutting me.
Oh, this is it.
Welcome, everyone, to the NPR three-point shooty hoops competition.
Now that we're all here, we can begin the trash-talking portion of this athletic pastime.
I'm ready to rumble.
Today on the program, Mindy gets her butt kicked and then has to go crying home to her mother, who is also sad that Mindy got her butt kicked.
Not this time, Ira.
All right, challengers, take your places when you're ready.
Everyone ready?
Excellent.
In three, two, one.
Shoot basket.
Mindy, you did it.
I guess all that sleep really did pay off.
Mindy?
Reggie, did you know all that stuff about sleep cycles and rapid eye movement?
Reggie?
Reggie?
Reggie, I said, did you know all that stuff about sleep cycles and rapid eye movement?
Me neither.
Now I kind of want to take a nap.
Let's go upstairs and find a place to lay down.
Oh yeah, let's wrap up the show first.
