Oh boy, this heat wave has got me hot under the collar, cooking up some ideas for cooling down, and I'm coming to you, Guy Raz, for a showdown at high noon.
Uh, showdown?
It's hot enough to melt the tar off a turnip.
Do turnips have tar?
Mindy, is that you?
I can't see you.
Something shiny is reflecting the sunlight.
Oh, you bet your sweet science spectacles.

Now, hang on.
Let me just shut the door here to our laboratory of bad ideas.
Oh, hi, Mindy.

Oh, you think I'm fooling?
Because let me tell you, I...
Okay, fine.
Define real, because I did make them out of a tinfoil takeout tray, okay?
I thought I smelled enchiladas.
Did you say we have a showdown scheduled?
Well, yeah, sort of.
See, today is day three of our WeWow Tinkering Challenge, so I thought it would be fun for us to do kind of an Experiment design throwdown, showdown.
Of course, I almost forgot.
Are the Wowzers here with us?
Oh, yeah, they're here.
But remember, they're invisible.
We can't see them.
Oh, yeah.
Well, welcome back to WeWow.
It's day three of our tinkering challenge.
So let's recap.
On day one, we took inspiration from our Wow in the World episode, a sunbrella for the planet.
We learned that some scientists are trying to solve the problem of climate change by trying to cast shade or deflect some of the sun's powerful rays.
And then on day two, we came up with a bunch of wonder questions and a specific challenge to solve.
Our challenge is to try to see how we can use the sun's rays to change the temperature, whether warmer or colder.
For us.
We want to see how we can make our ice cubes stay colder longer or make them melt faster by tinkering with the sun's rays.
So today, we're going to create and test our experiment.
Yesterday, we made a list and gathered a bunch of stuff that could help us with our experiment.
I have a big box of junk from the ice cream truck and from Guy Raz's kitchen drawers.
Mindy, I just had those drawers reorganized and relabeled.
Oh, don't worry.
I brought the labels.
Look, they're all stuck to my forehead for safekeeping.
See?
I've got a thermometer, a bunch of glass jars, some glitter, some ice cubes.
I've also got a pen and our adventure journal so that we can write our findings down.
Now, when it comes to any experiment, you need to gather data.
So we have to find out what to measure.
Now, for our experiment, that might be a measurement of time.
For example, how long does it take for an ice cube to melt?
We can use a stopwatch and write down the time it takes.
Um, I know I have a stopwatch in here somewhere.
Oh, here it is.

Another thing we need to make sure to do is to test our experiment more than once to make sure the data we collect is consistent.
Yeah, we don't want any bonker balls data that's different every time.
We'll need to repeat the experiment three times to make sure that it works.
So, Mindy, have you got any good ideas of things for our experiment in your box of junk?
Hey, Roz, even my ideas have ideas.
Okay, let's hear them.
Okay, hear me out.
I've got some glitter here, glitter that we spray up into the air to deflect the sun's rays before they can heat up our ice cubes.
But wait, glitter?
Such a sparkly idea, right?
It's sparkly, all right, and it might even work, but as far as I know, glitter is not biodegradable and if we spray it all around it might not decompose and we would be glittering.
You know, littering glitter.
That would be an epic fail.
Yeah, not something we want to repeat three times okay okay, let me see what else i have here.
My eyes i can't see anything because those shiny spurs on your feet are reflecting the sun's rays.
They're reflecting the sunlight right into my eyes.
Uh-huh.
That's it, Guy Raz.
Huh.
It might not be high noon, and I might not have any more spurs, but I do have more tinfoil.
What?
How's about I whip us up something shiny so we can both reflect those sun rays?
Uh, okay.
Here I go.
Whip, whip, whip, whip, whip, whip, whip, whip, whip, whip, whip.
Ooh.
Here you go, Guy Raz.
One shiny foil cow-pal hat for you.
One shiny foil cow-pal hat for me.
That's two shiny foil hats for science.
Well, anything for science, I guess.
But are you actually suggesting that we flash the sun with foil hats?
A wide-brimmed 10-gallon foil hats, Guy Raz.
Huh.
You know, this might actually work.
Really?
How?
Well, it seems like our shiny foil hats could reflect the sun's rays and bounce them back up into the sky.
And that might just slow down the melting of our ice cubes.
If I were to put a glass jar with an ice cube underneath the brim of my shiny hat, then it would not only make shade, But it would reflect the sun's rays away from the ice cube and keep it cooler, so the ice cube won't melt as fast.
And if you were to put another ice cube in another glass jar and use your shiny hat to reflect the rays and direct them at that ice cube, We might increase the heat energy and melt that cube faster.
So what are we waiting for?
We'll use one of our hats to see if we can melt the ice slower and another one of our hats to see if we can melt the ice faster.
And Mindy will need one more glass jar with an ice cube in it, but no reflective shiny hat anywhere near it.
And that one will be our control.
And I are out of control.
No, no, Mindy.
Control isn't about being in or out of control.
It's part of every good experiment.
A control is one part of your experiment that you keep consistent so you can compare the results.
Ah, so in other words, a control is something that we don't change in any way, no matter what.
It just... stays the same?
Right.
That way, we can use it to compare our data and see what actually did change in our experiment.
OK.
Preparing the ice cubes and glasses.
Got your hat ready, Guy Raz?
It's ready, partner.
OK.
Now I will flash the sun's rays back and away from my ice cube to keep it cooler.
And I'm going to try to flash the sun's rays poured my ice cube to melt it faster.
And we'll time the melting and write it down in our Anything for Science journal.
And remember, we need to do this three times.
We'll call our tinkering project the Clever Cooler Magnificent Melter Experiment.
Sounds good to me.
Wowzers, we are going to start our stopwatch to see how long it takes for the three different ice cubes to melt.
And while we time this out, it's your turn.
