Slash wow.
That's it.
It's going to be a November to remember.
But for now, let's get on with the show.
Woo!
Opening the door.
Hello, laboratory of bad ideas.
Oh, hey, Mindy.
Oh, hey, Guy Razzi.
I didn't see you there.
It's really heating up out there, isn't it?
Yeah.
Uh, Mindy?
Oh, no, Guy Raz.
I made you a Brussels sprout kale smoothie, and it's all melting.
You made me a smoothie?
Oh, thanks, Mindy.
And is that a cherry on top?
No, that's a clown nose.
I ran out of cherries.
Go ahead.
Slurp it up while it's still cold.
Okay.
Mmm.
Ah, yum.
It tastes like, uh, grass?
Oh, that's because I spilled it in the grass on the way over and then I had to scoop it back up into the cup.
But did you notice what's keeping it cold?
Are those brown ice cubes?
Uh, chocolate ice cream cubes, Guy Raz.
I made them myself.
Thought they'd be cool and refreshing on this hot day.
Well, they do offset the grassiness.
That's what I thought.
But look, they're starting to melt.
Oh, that's just from the heat on the way over.
It's so hot in here, Guy Raz.
Mind if I open a window?
But if you opened the window, it would get even warmer inside our lab.
Oh, good point.
That would be a bad idea for the Laboratory of Bad Ideas.
And speaking of our lab, it's time for day two of our WeWow Tinkering Challenge.
Of course.
That's right.
Are our Wowzers here?
Oh, yeah.
They're here.
They're just invisible.
You can't see them.
Oh, right.
Well, welcome.
This week we're inviting you into our Laboratory of bad ideas to join us in a tinkering project inspired by our Wow in the World episode A Sunbrella for the Planet.
Now, if you missed day one, go back and check out yesterday's WeWow, where we listened to the full episode.
Then meet us back here when you're done.
And if you're all caught up, then...
Let's move forward.
Yesterday, we learned how more and more extreme weather is being caused by climate change and the overall warming of the planet.
We also learned that scientists are studying and experimenting with different ways to slow down the effects of this climate change.
And they're getting ideas from nature by studying things like volcanoes.
Erupting volcanoes fling dirt and sulfur into the air.
And that dirt and sulfur create a shade that naturally lowers the temperature of everything underneath it.
And not only that, but those dirt and sulfur particles block the sun's rays and reflect or bounce some of them back out into space.
So scientists from Harvard University were curious.
What if they could try putting other particles into the atmosphere, safe ones, to make a massive sunbrella for the planet?
And this curiosity led them to try a wow experiment, using a weather balloon to release certain chemical particles into the clouds.
These chemicals would reflect some of the sun's rays back into space, keeping them from beating down on the Earth and heating up the planet.
And that got us thinkering.
Thinkering of tinkering.
Guy Raz, are you thinkering what I'm thinkering?
I'm thinkering I am.
The problem we want to solve is this.
How can we lower the temperature outside around us and keep the chocolate ice cream cubes in my smoothie from melting in the sun?
So what are we waiting for?
Wowzers, think of something in your world that you would like to keep cool from the sun's rays.
And maybe we can come up with a Bunker Balls new solution that can help the whole planet.
But for right now, let's just focus on how to keep my Brussels sprout kale smoothie cool on this hot day.
Yeah.
So, Wowzers, want to join us for some thinkering and tinkering?
We're going to take a quick break.
And when we come back, get ready to think, tinker, wonder, and wow together.
Wow in the World will be right back.
Grownups, this message is for you.
Hey, grown-ups, it's Mindy and Guy Raz here from Wow in the World.
Mindy and I have some brand new Wow in the World toys out in the world just in time for the holidays.
Made for the kids who love science and for the ones who don't yet.
From our 100 experiments, that Wow kit to the telescope and astronomy kit.
Our Wow in the World toys help your wowzer learn about their world through play.
Plus, you can hear exclusive audio content from me and Guy Raz to help your wowzer discover even more wows.
Grownups.
Give the gift of wow and wonder this holiday season with our latest Wow in the World toys designed with your curious wowzer in mind.

That's Tinkercast.com slash toys.
Welcome back, Wowzers.
Well, we're ready for our big wow challenge.
How can we lower the temperature on this hot day and slow down the melting of my chocolate ice cubes?
Right.
So how do we get started?
Well, scientists usually start with some curious questions or wonders, if you will.
Oh, I got a lot of those.
I wonder if we can build a giant pair of sunglasses to block the sun's rays.
Or maybe a sprinkler full of sunscreen to fight them off.
Well, that sounds pretty messy.
I wonder if we could trap or collect those sun rays and use them to heat something else up instead.
Yeah, if maybe we can change the temperature by redirecting the sun's rays to make things cooler or even warmer.
Wowzers, now it's time for you to make a list of all your wonders.
And then circle the wonder that wows you the most.
That will be your one big wonder for this week's tinkering challenge.
So go ahead, hit pause, and start wondering.
And when you finish, press play.
We'll be right here where you left us.
Please pause the show now and list all of your wonders.
Guy and Mindy will be right back.
Okay, Wowsers, got your big wonder because we have ours.
Our big wonder is, can we redirect the sun's rays to cool things off or heat things up?
Now it's time to start tinkering.
Okay, but first I'm going to need another sip of my smoothie here.
Mmm.
Ah, yum.
Oh no, the ice cream cubes are all melted.
That's it.
What's it?
Ice.
Ice cubes, Guy Raz.
Of course, ice.
We can compare different ways of trying to block and reflect.
And trap.
And trap. the rays to see what melts ice cubes the fastest and what melts ice cubes the slowest.
Perfect.
Now, what materials are we going to need to conduct this experiment?
Well, I'm thinking, for our experiment we'll probably need to gather up things like reflective tinfoil, some Tiny umbrellas, a few pairs of sunglasses, some ice cubes, glass jars, you know that kind of stuff.
Oh, good thinking, Guy Raz.
And Wowzers, think about what you will need to conduct your experiment.
Go ahead and gather your materials and finish your plan to test it out.
Then meet us back here tomorrow for day three of Wee Wow.
And tomorrow we'll create, test, and wow.
See you tomorrow for our WeWow Tinkering Challenge.
