What's the warm, fuzzy feeling you get when moved by love?
Thanks for asking. Have you ever been deeply moved when experiencing or witnessing a moment of powerful human connection?
It might be the unexpected urge to hug a stranger at a music concert for example, or a touching moment at an important life event like a birth wedding or funeral.
Well without realizing it you've been experiencing an inspirational feeling known as Kama muta.
It's been described by the guardian as the powerful emotion you didn't know you had.
Where does the name come from?
It's a Sanskrit term that means being moved by love.
Not just a little mind but deeply, to the point where you're overcome by a wave of love, beauty or intense human connection It's the kind of feeling that causes you to get a lump in your throat but it's more precise than that Kama Muta really catches you off guard and for a moment you're reminded just how beautiful people and the human experience can be If we all feel it, why haven't we heard of it before?
Well there are a lot of languages that have a specific word for this kind of emotion but English doesn't.
We tend to say things like, it really moved me or I had tears in my eyes.
But the feeling itself hasn't been clearly defined.
American psychological anthropologist Alan Fisk has played a prominent role in bringing karma muta to people's attention.
His interest in the emotion first started when discussing children's films with two fellow psychologists.
They realised that people often cry upon seeing positive events in films, despite crying typically being associated with sadness.
Fisk would go on to focus his work on the emotion for over a decade, founding the Kama Muta Lab, a group of researchers from psychology, anthropology and related disciplines.
Together, those researchers started using the term kama -muta in scientific publications from 2017 onwards.
Could you describe kama -muta as pure joy?
Well, it's certainly a positive emotion.
But it's more of a warm sensation in your chest that nudges you to be kinder.
To reach out. Or to strengthen a bond.
Even after the moment passes, it tends to leave you feeling better.
your heart rate slows and there's a sense of calm.
What's the point of knowing about karma muto?
Beyond being a bit of cultural insight, it can actually shift how you relate to your emotions, to other people and even how you experience daily life.
So the next time you feel that rush, the warmth in your chest, the sudden sting of tears, instead of thinking, I'm just too sensitive, or, I don't know why I'm crying, you might recognize it as Kāmamuta, a sign that you've experienced a moment of real connection.
It helps validate what you're feeling and it might make you feel more at ease with your sensitivity.
There you have it. Now you know what Kāmamuta is.
In under 3 minutes we answer your questions and help you understand the true meaning behind the trends, concepts, and acronyms that are making headlines.
