Welcome to the A to Z English podcast.
My name is Jack and I'm here with my co -host, Sochul.
And today we are under the vocabulary spotlight doing phrasal verbs using the verb punch.
And so, Sochul, what does it mean to punch in something?
To punch in. Punch in.
you can punch something in on a calculator um which literally means like here's my phone and then i'm punching it in like i'm literally because of the noise it makes when you push in the numbers um but you can also punch in on the clock so this is like back from when people had time cards too i think
because i saw it in spongebob that's how i know he had like a little time card and you'd like put it in the machine and it would like punch a hole or something in the time slot yeah i used to do that i in my job that i had a time card you go to the machine you punch it in it does like a little it punch
it the reason they call it punch in is because it actually punches a hole in the uh in the paper yeah yeah like a time slot yeah it's interesting yeah yeah okay Okay.
Number two, punch out.
Punch out. Am I going to get in trouble for this one?
If you punch someone out, you knocked them out.
Oh, yeah. That's one usage.
That's definitely one usage to punch out.
Yeah. There was a game that I used to play on video game called Mike Tyson's Punch -Out.
And because he used to punch out so many people, Mike Tyson, the boxer.
Right. Yeah, he was famous.
Yeah. What else does it mean?
it's the opposite of punch in oh right you punch out at the end of the day i guess right and it punches a little hole in your card and that under the time that you're leaving so it shows basically punching in and punching out just shows that you were arrived on time and that you left you didn't leave
early you know right and they look at your card and say okay did this person punch in or punch out at the correct time um yeah which i really hate that actually um it's very factory kind of like um like working in a in a car factory or you know a machine parts factory it's not really a blue it's not really
a white collar thing it's much more of a blue collar kind of a uh tradition you know kind of in korea when i was working and we were teachers there was like a fingerprint thing on the door that it would register so that if you put your fingerprint on it would register what time you punched in oh man that's
terrible yeah it was pretty crazy because it's like it makes you feel like you're a factory worker teacher you know you're a prisoner or something yeah yeah I don't mind like well I wish that blue collar wasn't treated so crappy because like they're literally treated like prisoners um there are some
white collar jobs like it's just you're on a time crunch and if you're a few minutes late you're definitely penalized or and even if you stay a few minutes after no one really appreciates that but don't you dare be late early they don't care if you if you leave an hour late or whatever they're fine
with with you giving your extra time to them but for free but you know oh my goodness you know the world you know hair on fire if you're a couple of minutes late in the morning you know so and actually companies have changed in the u .s as well where um they don't want you to stay overtime because in the u
.s in order to work over time you have to pay time and a half so you have to people what they make plus another half of what they make oh right so they kick people out and say you got to go home yeah don't want you here don't want to pay you more yeah we've got shareholders to think about um okay what is it
to punch up something well in comedy if you punch up versus punching down you're like making fun of someone that's got more societal power than you do or so power than you interesting okay then what's punching down it's making that's like look frowned upon and it's making fun it's like even between a white
person making racist jokes because white people usually hold more socioeconomic and cultural capital and power i would say uh cultural capital is the wrong word but cultural power than minorities versus the difference between my own minorities making a joke about white people because we don't hold as
much power in the system as white people do so we're like punching up if a white person is making fun of mexican people they're punching down right it's about privilege It's about power.
And this is all this is all in the comedy.
We're talking about comedy here.
But this is interesting because we do use punching up and punching down.
If I'm. If I if I have a if I have a good job and I make a lot of money and my neighbor loses his job and he's struggling and I go to my neighbor, I'm like, you're such a loser.
you know you you know that's punching down like that's not fun that's yeah you're being a huge jerk right yeah yeah yeah but if my but if my neighbor you know is is uh has a has a good job but i have an even better job and i make more money and i have this new car and it's all shiny you know, new BMW
and my neighbor makes a joke about it.
Like, uh, Hey, you know, your, your new car, you trying to show off a little bit to everybody in the neighborhood, you know, that's like, that's, that's not punching down.
He's not, he's not making me feel bad.
He's just giving me a hard time.
He's making a joke.
And so that's punching up.
Yeah. Right. What is the other meaning of punch up jack the other meaning of punch up is to like fix something like fix a piece of writing that is uh that's not very well written so if you punch it up a little bit you you fix some grammar mistakes you make the uh they use it a lot in like hollywood
for writing scripts okay so you need to you have to punch up this dialogue the the writing is not good enough And you need to punch up this script.
And so to punch it up means to improve or enhance something.
So add more energy, more excitement, or more impact to something.
So to punch it up means to, you know, make it better, enhance it.
Yeah. Interesting. Yeah.
