To everyone who loves the taste of tradition, come enjoy a classic Wisconsin fish fry at Culver's.
I'm Genesis from Culver's in Claremont, Florida, and here, family fish fry is a part of who we are.
We've been serving up fish fry favorites for over 40 years, all thanks to the Culver Family Roots and Wisconsin Supper Club, the place where the fish fry was perfected.
If you're craving something crispy on the outside and flaky on the inside, you've got to try our hand -battered North Atlantic Cod.
It's perfectly seasoned and my personal favorite.
Or if you're in the mood for a little extra crunch, our lightly breaded butterfly jumbo shrimp hits the spot every time.
Whatever you order, I promise it will be made with love by a team who cares because we want every guest to feel like family.
That's just how we do it in Wisconsin.
Dive into delicious with all your fish fry favorites at Culver's.
From Wisconsin with love, welcome to delicious.
welcome to the eight is the english podcast my name is jack and today i'm here with my co -host social and this is a vocabulary builder episode and i don't know social how useful this vocabulary is going to be for our students but it's fun and i have some 1960s and 1970s slang and And I think the closer we
get to, you know, the 2000s, the more you're going to know.
Because, you know, like, Giggle Water, that was a pretty weird one last week, the 40s and 50s.
I just want to say, I just love saying Giggle Water.
I don't know why it's such a fun word.
Yeah. So here's some 60s slang.
Number one, Groovy.
What does Groovy mean?
it just means cool like wow that's groovy man it's like that's cool that's neat that's like chill you know that's cool yep exactly groovy cool awesome how about rad uh it means the same thing like awesome those rad waves it's like those are some amazing waves yeah it's basically the same as groovy oh
your new car is groovy your new car is rad like that's it yeah yeah okay or it's like oh brian is a rad dude man yeah he is groovy yeah like so so many of these are the same but uh what is a hippie a hippie is a person that it was kind of a movement in the 60s and 70s i guess um and anyone listening
to that word will have a visual like the little bandana headband thing the round john lennon sunglasses or glasses yeah um the kind of bell -bottom pants bell -bottom pants and open vest or whatever chest hair lots of chest hair yeah it was just kind of like you know um peace anti -war cultural movement
of the 60s and 70s that's kind of basically what maybe we could say counter -cultural yes counter -cultural movement of the 60s and 70s and i guess it arose um also um in contrast to the vietnam war right that was a big part of it was protesting the war you know anti -war love not love and peace love not war
that kind of stuff yeah yes make make love not war that's the that's the expression yeah that's the hippie slogan right um out of sight out of sight does that mean like far out yeah it's same as groovy out of sight yeah i guess it means super cool that one almost got me because i'd be like out of sight
out of mind which means like if you don't see it you don't think about it or whatever and then like that out of sight is far is like far out which is the same as groovy rad cool all that groovy rad cool out of sight yeah yeah um bummer uh i we still use that i know it's like um the winter has been super
mild here in iowa and then i was telling someone i was talking to someone and i was like oh it's been such a mild winter and they're like you know it's supposed to snow 10 inches later today and i was like that's a bummer it just it sucks basically oh my god that sucks that's terrible that's bad news
right that's about a disappointing or unfortunate situation you know a bummer you know oh john can't uh come to the party on friday oh what a bummer that's a bummer right or if we hate john that's rad but okay catch some rays catch some rays um i think a lot of people use this in surf culture and in hippie
culture whatever it's like i'm gonna go out and catch some rays like get some sunshine yes yeah yep get get get some sun get get some sun sunbathing get some sunshine get some rays um freak out um freak out uh just go all out man go like there's that song that has that as a lyric um i think yeah yeah
it's just like having a good time and and dancing and stuff i think i don't know oh wow okay so this one you kind of missed this one a little bit um i mean i think i i think you're thinking more of like i think the more modern version of this is like to kind of freak out is like to go to get freaky
which is totally different well freak out kind of to like freak out is like oh my god like that's horrible right lose control in this context because something because it can also mean like your parents freaked out because you went you decided to skip school today yes exactly got angry that's what it
means oh that's the context that's the context hard about it because i was like if it's old then it must be something different because i remembered that song right right yeah and maybe like you're right i think there is there are a couple contexts for this one actually yeah freak out can also mean to
like get freaky which is to more of like just like lose lose control in a good way you know and just like like let loose um but in this case uh yeah they're saying more like uh get angry you know emotionally lose control and freak out my parents freaked out um how about dude now this is 70s now we're
in the 70s now dude it's just a word for a guy it's just like what's up dude or a person but you use it i still use it i'm like hey dude come on you know um I usually say hey man or hey guy hey yeah I do I think I do I think I do use it sometimes yeah I use it more like dude like why did you do that man that is weird
yeah like dude relax like the only person I really talk to like that is my dog when I tell him like yeah you're like Come on, dude.
Yeah. Yeah. Funky. Funky is.
Is that a good thing?
Yeah. OK, then if in the context where it's a good thing, it just means.

Boogie as the song goes.
Yep, yep. There you go.
This one is right in your wheelhouse right here.
This is related to your name.
Chill out. Chill out.
It just means to relax.
Like, dude, chill out is like, take it down a few notches.
Relax. It's not that serious.
Chill out. I like that, dude.
chill out right it's all groovy man it's all far out um tube sock what the heck is this like calling someone a tube sock no this is just a just like a noun just the item what is a tube oh a person a tube sock is just like a sock that people wore like one of those white socks that goes up way up your
shin has has like two red stripes on it yeah or sometimes they're just white but yeah it's like in that vein right that's funny i thought it was like i still thought it was slang so i was gonna be like man you're such a tube sock like i'm gonna be like an insult let's make it we're making new slang
here at the yeah it is the english podcast don't be a tube don't be such a tube sock man yeah dude yeah um foxy oh foxy means like attractive person woman or man that's hot attractive so what do you would you you you like women will describe men as foxy as well i've seen it in old time movies i don't
know if it's accurate to the time period but i have seen it in like in movies that are supposed to be like from like greece and stuff that's kind of in that time period i guess yeah um i feel like women more say like the hot like hot that guy's hot well no one really uses foxy period anymore but i feel
like in the time period i think people did use foxy yeah yeah right this is the 70s i'm i'm talking i was talking about right now right but you're right even now men wouldn't use foxy for women really and women wouldn't really use foxy for men but i think back in the time period i do think it was at least
somewhat gender neutral but probably more applied to women than men okay okay this one if if any of these are going to get you this will get you um gag me with a spoon i think i know the intent of what it means but i'm trying to figure out how to phrase it it's like oh gag me with a spoon man like you
like is it that kind of thing yeah disgusting yeah yeah yeah so when you see something disgusting you'd be like oh gag me with a spoon we used to use that a lot in the in the 80s when we were kids i think we heard our parents use that expression from the 70s so yeah i'd see something like oh gag me
with a spoon which is such a dumb expression it's so stupid yeah it is kind of cringy yeah and why a spoon it's so weird yeah yeah just use a finger or something pull the spoons out okay yeah get those spoons out yeah um right on right on um my dad still uses that sometimes uh it just means like it's
let's say someone says an opinion you really agree with it's like yeah right on man like that's you're right man like you got it yeah yeah i like how you use man at the end there that's very 70s right on man totally man right on uh no wait totally we haven't gotten to the 80s yet so that's next week
um okay uh yeah that's it But again, Sochal, you aced the exam.
Yeah, I got this. I have an old dad, kind of, so I guess that probably helps.
Well, you have a groovy dad.
Yeah, I have a groovy dad.
I mean, he's younger than your dad.
He's like in between your dad and your age.
Right. I mean, he's either like a really – he's like an old Gen Xer or young.
the last, he's like the last year to be a gen X or the, sorry, the last year to be a boomer, the first year to be a gen X or cusp.
Oh, okay. Okay. And I'm, I'm right on the, the kind of opposite.
I'm like the, the, uh, what am I?
Millennial gen X. I'm on the line there.
Yeah. And I'm a gen Z millennial cusp.
So that's funny. We're just three generations of cuspers.
We're all, we're all just a bunch of lost generation people, you know?
Yeah. Yeah. There's a, there's a really funny, I'll send you it later, Jack, um, on Facebook.
There's a guy who does like the different generations.
And every time he does gen X, the guy reminds me of you.
He's always wearing like a beanie.
And it just reminds, it kind of reminds me of you in a way.
Cause he's like wearing the beanie and stuff.
And it just was like, it's like Jack in a way I don't know how to describe it.
I'm always wearing either a ball cap or a beanie, but it's not, it's not a shame thing.
it's more just like uh my head gets cold i think it's like a trend thing like for that time for like people who are kind of gen x's because it's like he's representing gen x's and he's always wearing the beanie um and we do yeah we do wear like yeah that kind of like that like uh brooklyn the hipster
kind of look yeah it's funny he's a millennial he wears uh like a baseball cap and so it's funny that you're like um the cusp and you wear like uh the baseball cap or the beanie yeah my my style is like if i if i don't look like um a gas station attendant then i'm doing something wrong that's my my
kind of look yeah that's kind of what this i'll have to send it to you it really it resonates it resonates with your aura all right listeners well uh let us know what you think in a comment down below at a to z English podcast dot com shoot us an email at a to z English podcast at gmail dot com and join our
