Before we begin I want to remind you to look at the description of this podcast episode for the vocabulary list. You can take these words and phrases and study them so you can build your vocabulary.
Now let's talk about the phrase I would love to.
There are a lot of different ways to use this phrase.
And so what I'm going to do is I'm going to tell you about a conversation I had with my friend recently.
I did an episode about this injury that I have dealt with this year.
It's the worst injury I have ever had in my entire life.
And it has made my year really difficult.
If you haven't watched or listened to that episode, I will leave a link, but I was talking to my friend about that injury that I had and about the surgery I was going to have that was was going to fix that injury.
When I had my conversation with my friend, I hadn't had my surgery yet.
So I was talking with her about the surgery.
I was a little bit nervous, a little bit scared about the surgery.
And I was just talking to her about things I would hope would happen afterwards.
Because of the pain in my back and the pain going down my leg into my foot, I have not been able to stand or walk for more than about 15 minutes at a time for the past year.
It's been really challenging.
When I get out of bed in the morning, it's hard to get out of bed.
The first step that I take after I get out of bed is painful, and I'm just in pain all day.
Sometimes the pain is so bad that I actually wake up at night, and it's just been really difficult.
difficult so I was talking to my friend about those difficulties and I told her I would love to have my life back I would love to not have pain in my leg the surgery that I was going to have was going to cure that leg pain the surgeon told me that it would go away right away right after the surgery and I was telling her that I would just love for that to happen already I'm so tired of being in pain.
And I told her that after the surgery, I would love to be able to go for a walk again.
I have a dog. My dog is a super cute Pomeranian.
And before this injury, we would go on walks all the time.
And I'd also walk with my dog and my mom.
And we would go for these long walks.
We'd walk for an hour or more.
And it was just really enjoyable.
I really liked doing it.
and I haven't been able to do it for over a year.
And I was telling my friend, I would love to be able to walk my dog again.
I would love to go on a walk with my mom again.
It has just been such a sad year.
I've not been able to do all of these things that I liked doing and I would love to do it again.
I also would love to work out again.
I did an episode on physical fitness and fitness vocabulary that I will leave a link for.
But in that episode, I talked about how I liked weightlifting and I was weightlifting about four to five days a week now that is kind of why I got injured that along with a lot of other things caused my injury but I was telling my friend I would love to exercise again I know I cannot lift any weights for two to three months after my surgery and I probably will never lift heavy weight again but I would love to get back into the routine of exercising I would love to be able to do some weightlifting again because it's just one of my favorite exercises.
And I was telling her about all of these things, but I was also telling her about my recovery.
I knew that after my surgery, I would not really be able to walk around very much for the first week.
I would be probably in a lot of pain after my surgery and I would need time to recover.
And my friend told me that she would want to help me during that time.
She said, I would love to help you.
If you need any help, just let me know.
I can bring over food.
food. I can help you around your house.
Just tell me if you need anything.
My friend's super awesome.
She's super nice. And I've had a lot of friends say the same thing because my friends have known how bad this year has been.
They know how difficult it's been for me.
And I told her that was really nice because I knew it was going to be difficult one to two weeks after my surgery.
And then we talked about my friend and her upcoming trip.
She has children and she has was her husband, and they were going to go on a trip together.
And it was going to be one of the first trips they've taken this year.
And so she was talking about how she would love to go traveling more with her kids if they had more time.
She would love to go to the beach with them, but it's just difficult when you have little kids and a husband who's busy with work.
It's difficult to find time, but she was really looking forward to this trip.
And she was talking about the things she would love to do with them.
And I was listening to her and agreeing with her and also kind of of talking about my trips because I was supposed to take two trips with my mom this year and we had to cancel them because I couldn't walk I could not sit in the airplane I could not go on an airplane flight so we had to cancel our trips and I told her yeah I understand because I would love to go on trips with my mom I would love to take the trips that we had planned I just couldn't do it of course at the time but I would love to do it in the future and my friend was saying how she she would also love to take her children to Thailand.
She's from Thailand.
She was born and raised there and then moved to the United States.
So she was saying that she would love to take her children when they get older.
She would love for them to experience her home country and meet some of her family there.
And I've never been to Thailand.
I've heard a lot about it.
There's a lot of people who go and post videos about it, but I've never been.
And I would love to go.
And she told me that when her kids are older, when maybe they're in college, she's going to to spend more time in Thailand.
And she would love for me to go with her.
And I told her I would love to go.
I would love to go to Thailand.
That would be so much fun, especially with someone who is from Thailand and is a native speaker.
And that would just be a great trip to spend time with my friend in Thailand.
And she said that we're definitely going to go when her children are older and we are older.
Both of us are older.
We are going to go to Thailand.
And I said, I would love to go.
That sounds like a really awesome time because I would love to travel around the country.
There's a lot of things I would like to do.
I would love to go to some wildlife sanctuaries.
I would love to enjoy the food, to spend time on the beach. There's just so many things to do there, and I think it would be a wonderful trip.
So did you hear the different ways we use the phrase, I would love to?
If you didn't, don't worry.
We're going to go over all of the different definitions and how to use that phrase.
So the first way that you can use the a phrase, I would love to, is to offer something to someone.
It could be support.
It could be a physical thing.
It could be an experience, but you're offering something to them.
So with my friend, she offered to bring me food.
She offered to help me around my house because she said that she would love to help me after my surgery.
That is her way of offering her support, saying that she would be able to do things for me while I'm recovering.
She also offered to take me on a trip to Thailand.
She said, I would love for you to go with me to Thailand.
That is her invitation.
That is her way of asking me to go with her.
The second way that you can use the phrase is to accept the invitation or accept whatever someone is offering to you.
When she offered to take me to Thailand, when she said, I would love for you to go to Thailand with me, I said, I would love to to go that is my way of accepting it that's my way of saying yes I would like to go with you now of course you can just say yes you can say I would like to go but I would love to go maybe just sounds a little bit more polite a little bit more friendly a little bit more enthusiastic I would love to do that if you have a friend who wants to go see a movie and they ask you do you want to go see this movie with me this weekend you can say I would love to I would love to go to
the movies with you.
It's a very polite way of agreeing and accepting that invitation.
Now the third way you can use it is when you're talking about the future.
When I was talking with my friend, I did not have my surgery yet.
So I was not able to walk.
I was not able to be pain -free.
There were so many things I couldn't do.
And I was talking about the future with her.
I would love to be pain -free.
I would love to walk my dog.
I would love to do all of these things.
In that case, I'm talking about the future.
I'm talking about the immediate future because my surgery was very soon after that conversation.
And those were things that I thought were likely to happen.
If my surgery went well, I was going to be able to walk without pain.
I was going to be able to take my dog for a walk.
I was going to be able to stand and sit and not have this pain going down my back and down my leg.
So that was an immediate future and a strong possibility of it happening.
but you can also use it when you're talking about things that maybe will happen, maybe not, maybe are more hypothetical.
So for example, my friend said that she would love to travel with her kids more, but her husband's really busy, so most likely they're not going to go on a lot of family trips, they're not going to go somewhere every single weekend, because her husband does have work, he is busy, they're not able to travel as much as they would want to.
So in that case, she used the phrase but it was more of a wish more of a hypothetical situation something that she thinks probably won't come true but still hopeful that maybe it could I would love to go on work trips with my family but my husband is so busy and doesn't have time talking about something you would wish would happen you would like to happen you can also talk about things that are in the very distant future my friend said she was going to take me me to Thailand when her kids are in college and that would be a long time from now many many years very distant future maybe we will go
maybe we won't we don't know but we can still use that phrase I would love to go to Thailand with you once my kids are in college a very distant future a hypothetical situation but of course we're hopeful that we can do it because we would like to that would be a lot of fun so you can use this when you're talking about yourself let's say you you are in school and you know you have many more years before you graduate, you can say, I would love to be done with school.
Or if you're planning on moving somewhere, you're planning on getting a new job, you're planning on going somewhere, moving to a different country, I would love to get a new job and move to Thailand or move to England or wherever, right?
You can use that phrase, even if it's not in the immediate future, even if it's just a wish, something in the distant future you can still say I would love to I would love to get a new job and move now we didn't use this last way of using this phrase and this is a more negative way a more sarcastic or ironic way of using this phrase this is if you don't actually want to do something if you are at work and your boss asks you if you want to come in during the weekend and work overtime and work work during the weekend and you don't want to do it, you can say, oh, I would love to.
In that case, you're still using that phrase, but it's the opposite meaning.
It means that you don't want to do it, right?
You don't want to come to work and work overtime.
So you have to listen to the tone when someone says it.
If it's a positive thing, usually you have a cheery voice.
Usually you're more enthusiastic.
You're more optimistic, hopeful about how you're saying this.
I would love to go to Thailand with my best friend.
Or if you were saying it with a more negative, more sarcastic tone, I would love to go into the office this weekend.
You can hear the tone difference.
I'm very excited for one thing.
I am not excited for the other thing.
I don't actually want to do it.
I hope you enjoyed this episode and I hope you feel a little bit more confident about using the phrase I would love to.
