What?
They're practically cousins, just with very different ideas about nap locations.
Hello friends and welcome back to Sleep Tight Science a bedtime show that answers your questions about science.
Maybe you have a cat curled up somewhere in your house right now, on a sunny windowsill under the couch or right at the foot of your bed.
Or maybe you've seen lions at the zoo, watched nature shows about tigers prowling through forests, or read picture books with leopards hiding in trees.
All of these animals, whether it's the tabby napping on your lap or the fierce tiger hunting in the jungle, belong to the same family tree.
They're all cats.
Scientists group all cats, both wild and domestic, into a family called Felidae.
It's a remarkable collection of hunters that includes everything from a tiny two-kilogram house cat to a 300-kilogram Siberian tiger.
Some live alone on mountainsides.
Others roam the savanna in family groups.
Some can roar loud enough to be heard five kilometers away, while others can only meow and purr.
Cats aren't like the animals in our superpower series.
They don't have electric organs like eels or regenerating limbs like axolotls.
Instead, all cats, big and small, share something different.
They are some of nature's most perfectly designed hunters, with specialized eyes that see in near darkness, Bodies built for explosive power and behaviors fine-tuned over millions of years of evolution.
But that brings up some interesting questions, don't you think?
Is your house cat a miniature tiger?
Why do their eyes look so different from ours?
And could your sweet purring pet ever turn into something wild?
In this episode, we'll answer three specific questions.
First, why do cats have those strange vertical slit pupils while we have round ones?
Second, why can't lion cubs roar when they're little, but your kitten could meow from the day it was born.
And third, what's actually different between house cats and their wild cousins?
And what's surprisingly the same?
By the end of this episode, you'll understand how cats' eyes work, why different cats make different sounds, and whether domestication really changed cats or just made them more comfortable living with us.

Picture a tiger padding silently through tall grass at twilight, its eyes watching tail swishing slowly.
Then picture your house cat doing almost exactly the same thing, while stalking a toy mouse across the living room floor.
Let's discover what connects all cats and what makes each type special.
If you've ever looked closely at a cat's eyes maybe your house cat or a picture of a tiger you've probably noticed something unusual.
Their pupils aren't round like ours.
Instead, they're vertical slits that can change shape dramatically, from thin lines in bright light to wide, almost round circles in darkness.
So why do cats have these distinctive slit-shaped pupils when most animals, including us, have round ones?
It's about being an ambush predator.
That's a fancy way of saying.
Cats hunt by sneaking up close to their prey and then pouncing at exactly the right moment.
Those unusual pupils give them superpowers for that hunting style.
Think of a cat's pupil like the opening on a camera.
The pupil is the black circle or slit in the center of the eye that lets light in.
When there's too much light, the pupil gets smaller to protect the sensitive parts inside.
When it's dark, the pupil opens wide to let in as much light as possible.
But cat pupils do something very special.
They can change size about 135 times from narrowest to widest.
That's a huge range.
Human pupils can only change about 15 times.
It's like having a camera that can handle everything from blazing noon sunshine to almost complete darkness, all by adjusting one simple opening.
In bright daylight, a cat's pupil becomes a thin vertical slit, almost like a tiny line.
This protects their super sensitive eyes from too much light.
At night or in dim conditions, that same pupil can open up almost round, letting in every bit of available light.
This gives cats incredible night vision.
They can see in light levels six times dimmer than what we need.
But there's another reason for the vertical slit shape, and it's all about judging distance.
When you are a hunter who needs to pounce at exactly the right moment, you need to know precisely how far away your prey is.
A vertical slit pupil helps with depth perception.
That's your ability to tell if something is close or far away.
Scientists discovered that vertical slit pupils work especially well for animals that hunt from a crouch close to the ground.
They help the predator judge the exact distance to their prey before that final explosive pounce.
Not all cats have slit pupils though.
Lions, tigers, and cheetahs, the really big cats, have round pupils more like ours.
That's because they hunt differently.
Lions hunt in groups across open grasslands.
Cheetahs chase their prey at high speed rather than sneaking close.
They don't need the same close-range measuring tool that an ambush hunter does.
But your house cat?
Even though it might spend most of its time napping on the couch, it still has the eyes of a wild ambush hunter.
Those vertical slits are perfectly designed for stalking mice in tall grass, hiding behind furniture to pounce on a toy or for hunting wiggly toes.
The next time you see a cat, watch how their pupils change in different lighting.
Go from a bright room to a dimmer one and you'll see those slits widen right before your eyes.
It's really cool watching their eyes adjust automatically to see in almost any light.
Always ready. for the perfect pounce.
Different cats talk in very different ways.
A lion's roar can be heard eight kilometers away across the African savanna.
Your house cat meows at you when it wants dinner and both can purr, though not at the same time as making other sounds.
So why can't lion cubs roar when they're little?
But your kitten could meow from the day it was born.
The answer is hidden inside their throats, in a tiny bone called the hyoid.
The hyoid bone sits right between the base of the tongue and the voice box.
And it's different in big cats versus small cats.
And that difference changes everything about the sounds they can make.
In big cats like lions tigers, jaguars and leopards.
Part of the hyoid bone isn't actually solid bone at all.
Instead, it's made of stretchy elastic tissue, kind of like a rubber band.
This flexible tissue allows their voice box to vibrate in a special way that creates an incredibly deep, powerful roar.
That's the sound that can travel across vast distances to warn other lions away from their territory or call their pride together.
In small cats, including your house cat, plus wild cats like lynxes, ocelots and bobcats.
The hyoid bone is completely solid, ossified all the way through.
That's the scientific word meaning turned into bone.
With a solid hyoid bone.
These cats can't produce a roar, but they can purr continuously while breathing in and out, creating that gentle rumbling sound we all love.
A cat can have a stretchy hyoid that lets them roar or a solid hyoid that lets them purr continuously, but they can't do both.
Even though they have the right kind of hyoid bone from birth, lion cubs can't roar right away because their bodies aren't ready yet.
Their vocal cords, the stretchy bands inside their throat that vibrate to make sound, are still small and thin.
Their chest cavity hasn't developed the power needed to push enough air through to create that massive sound.
It's like trying to play the tuba when you're only strong enough to blow a whistle.
Lion cubs practice as they grow.
As teenagers they start making these funny half-hearted, roaring attempts, sort of like your voice cracking when you're learning to sing a difficult note.
By the time they're about three or four years old, their bodies have grown strong enough and their practice has paid off.
Suddenly They can unleash a full, earth-shaking roar.
Kittens, on the other hand, can meow from their very first days.
They need to communicate with their mother right away.
I'm cold, or I'm hungry, or where are you?
Those tiny meows are their survival tool.
Adult wild cats rarely meow.
But house cats figured out something clever.
Meowing works on humans.
We respond to it.
So they kept that kitten behavior into adulthood, essentially training us to feed them, let them in and out and pay attention to them.
There's one more interesting cat sound, the purr.
Scientists believe purring happens at a frequency between 25 and 150 hertz, a range that might actually help promote bone healing and reduce pain.
Some researchers think cats purr not just when they're happy, but also when they're injured or stressed, perhaps to comfort themselves.
Pretty amazing for such a simple sound.
One exception to the roaring rule?
Snow leopards.
Even though they are part of the big cat family, they can't roar properly because their vocal anatomy is slightly different.
They can purr, though, making them the gentle giants of the mountain cat.
So here is a question for you.

The answer is yes and no.
House cats and tigers are incredibly similar in many ways.
But domestication, the process of wild animals becoming comfortable living with humans, created some important differences.
Let's explore what stayed the same and what changed.
Your house cat is still at the core a wild hunter.
Watch any cat playing and you'll see the same behaviors a tiger uses.
That wiggle before they pounce?
Tigers do that too.
The stalk and freeze hunting technique?
Yep, same.
The way they groom themselves with that sandpaper tongue or stretch their flexible spine into impossible yoga poses.
All tiger moves.
All cats, big and small, are obligate carnivores.
That's a science term meaning they must eat meat to survive.
Unlike dogs, who can digest grains and vegetables pretty well, cats need nutrients found only in animal tissue.
Their bodies are built specifically for processing meat short digestive systems, specialized teeth, everything.
House cats also kept their territorial instincts.
They mark their space by rubbing scent glands on furniture, patrol their territory even if it's just your living room, and can be quite particular about who enters their domain.
They sleep 16 hours a day or more, just like big cats do, and they're still pets, solitary hunters at heart.
Even though lions live in groups, most cats prefer to hunt alone.
Even their physical tools remain unchanged.
Retractable claws stay sharp because they're tucked away when not in use.
Those specialized carnalized teeth slice meat like scissors.
Their flexible spine lets them twist midair and always land on their feet.
The tiger blueprint is still there.
But about 10,000 years ago in the Middle East, something interesting happened.
Humans started farming and storing grain in large quantities.
That grain attracted mice.
And guess what loves catching mice?
Wildcats.
The African wildcat, the direct ancestor of today's house cat, started hanging around these early farms.
Unlike dogs, cats weren't actively trained by humans.
Instead, the friendliest wildcats who could tolerate being near people got free meals without having to hunt as much.
Over thousands of generations, this created cats who were comfortable living alongside humans.
Domestication kept cats in a kind of permanent kittenhood in some ways.
Scientists call this neoteny, heaping juvenile traits into adulthood.
Your adult cat meows at you, which wild cats rarely do after kittenhood.
It figured out that meowing gets human attention and food.
Domestic cats also stay playful throughout their lives, whereas wild cats mostly stop playing once they're adults.
Domestication also created much more variety in appearance.
Wild cats are pretty uniform.
Spotted or striped tabbies in browns and grays.
But house cats now come in orange black white calico, Siamese points and dozens of other patterns.
Some have long fur.
Some have almost no fur.
Some have folded ears or extra toes.
There's one other change that might surprise you.
Domestic cats have slightly smaller brains relative to their body size than their wild ancestors.
About 25% smaller.
But that doesn't mean they're less intelligent.
They just don't need as much brain space dedicated to survival skills, because humans provide food and shelter.
The fascinating thing is that house cats sit right on the border between wild and domestic.
They can survive perfectly well without humans if needed, which is why feral cats exist all over the world, but they also genuinely enjoy companionship and form real attachments to their families.
So is your house cat a tiger?
In hunting instinct, physical design, and carnivore biology, absolutely.
But in temperament, communication, and willingness to share your couch?
That's all thanks to thousands of years of living along humans, learning that the strange tall creatures with the can openers aren't so bad after all.
