Whatever your thing, it could be anything.
Canva helps you make that thing a thing.
Canva is a simple online tool thing.
We'll see you next time.
Good morning, everyone.
I'm Kate Baldwin.
It's Thursday, May 14th.
Here are your five things.
Number one, the face to face.
Chinese President Xi Jinping certainly rolled out the red carpet for President Trump's state visit.
Complete with full military parade, a banquet, dozens of cheering children lining the route before the two leaders sat down for their big talks.
On the agenda, trade and tariffs, the future of Taiwan and the Iran war, of course.
In his public comments, Xi talked about the US relationship in a new way, saying they needed quote unquote constructive strategic dialogue, stability.
It's an honor to be with you.
It's an honor to be your friend, and the relationship between China and the USA is going to be better than ever before.
Our two countries have more common interests than differences.
Success in one is an opportunity for the other, and a stable bilateral relationship is good for the world.
She also offered what's seen as China's most direct warning yet on Taiwan.
Now the White House's readout of the closed-door meeting makes no mention of Taiwan, instead focused on economic cooperation, reopening the Strait of Hormuz and also saying both countries agreed that Iran can never have a nuclear weapon.
The viral moments though, that people are watching, like this Secretary of State marveling at the ornate ceiling in the Great Hall.
And there's also, of course, Elon Musk taking a moment to spin in a circle for a video on his phone.
Number two, the Murdoch case.
A wild, wild twist here.
South Carolina's attorney general is trying now to fast track a new murder trial for Alec Murdoch, after the state Supreme Court overturned his convictions for the murder of his wife and son.
This is all because of what the court called improper external influences on the jury by the court's clerk, Becky Hill.
Some jurors from the first trial had reported Hill made comments during the trial to them insinuating Murdoch was guilty, telling them to watch him closely.
Well, she denies that, but did plead guilty last year to sharing sealed court exhibits with the media as she was writing a tell-all book.
As for Murdoch, he stays behind bars as he awaits his new trial, because he was also serving time for a 2023 conviction on financial crimes.
Here's the AG.
While we strongly disagree with the Supreme Court, we respect this decision because that's how the process is supposed to be played out.
Our hope is to get this case retried by the end of the year, but obviously no time will tell if we're able to do that.
Number three, the water rescue.
The US Coast Guard and Air Force saved the day for 11 people after their plane crashed into the Atlantic Ocean.
They were traveling between islands in the Bahamas and they were found about 80 miles off of the Florida coast.
The passengers had spent nearly five hours just floating around on a life raft after they went down.
The pilot had reported an in-flight emergency.
After the crash landing, an emergency locator beacon helped rescue his track down their location.
There's video here of the Air Force then crew hoisting the 11 survivors from the rough waters.
The crew saying after that rescue came down, but afterward that that rescue came down to the wire.
Challenging part heading out there was balancing fuel concerns with dodging thunderstorms.
In total, we did nine hoists in about three to five foot seas.
And we took it down to about, we had about five minutes left before we were bingo.
We had five minutes left in gas when we got the last person out of the water.
Officials say everyone is in stable condition.
Bahamian authorities are investigating the crash.
Number four, the sentencing.
Today is the first day of a life sentence without the possibility of parole for Corey Richens.
She's the Utah woman convicted of poisoning and killing her husband Eric, and then afterward writing a children's book about grief.
The judge handed down the most severe penalty possible to her on what would have been Eric's 44th birthday, the judge saying that she was quote simply too dangerous to ever be free.
Watching Corey Richens during sentencing was quite something.
She appeared to gasp, roll her eyes, even smirk, as her late husband's family gave.
Victim impact statements.
Richen's three sons.
They were not in the room, but therapists actually read their statements in court.
One saying this, quote, Now Richens herself spoke.
Her message, when she did, was for her sons.
I don't know who or what I'm supposed to be if it's not a mother.
You're a mother.
And as much as you've been influenced into thinking that dad was murdered, that I took your dad from you, that is completely wrong and an absolute lie.
More right after this.

One last thing, guys.
And one thing we know is that role models are a good thing.
And today, we got a really good one.
18-year-old Canadian NHL player, Matthew Schaefer.
He just won the Rookie of the Year award, which is called the Calder.
The Islanders defenseman, led all first year players in time on the ice and also tied for the most goals.
But those stats on the ice are not why he is such he is role model worthy.
It's what he's doing off the ice.
Matt lost his mom to breast cancer in 2024.
Since then he's been living with a host family in the United States as he plays, so there were lots of tears when his dad and brother surprised him with the big announcement on Good Morning America.
You are the Calder Trophy winner.
Thank you.
Oh my gosh.
So cute.
There's even more goodness.
The people he wanted to share his trophy with first, the kids at a children's hospital in Queens.
Happy birthday dear Logan.
Happy birthday to you.
And Schaefer is now working with the Islanders Charitable Foundation to open a support center at the hospital named after his mother.
I'm Kate Baldwin.
Those are the five things you need to know to get your day going.
Now get going.
I'm CNN tech reporter Claire Duffy.
This week on the podcast, Terms of Service.
What do we know about how much AI is contributing to energy consumption, energy demand right now?
And how does that compare with other industries?
The best resource for that is the International Energy Agency, which is sort of the global energy think tank that collects data on all of this.
And what they predict is that about 8 of the additional electricity that we're going to need by 2030 that will be for data centers.
The other 92% is for other things, industry electrification, electric vehicles, etc.
And AI is really only driving part of that increase in demand.
