Hi there welcome to Tuesday and to Radio Headspace I'm Dora and if new here.
I'm so glad you've joined." So when I first started meditating, I thought I had to dedicate an hour every day sitting crossleg on a cushion, with complete silence around me.
Needless to say, it felt impossible.
Life is busy, noisy and unpredictable.
And I found myself thinking, who has the time for this?
If this sounds familiar, you're not alone.
Over the next few episodes, we'll explore how to build in meditation practice that fits your life, no matter how busy it is.
Today, let's start with how to approach meditation.
Especially if you're thinking, I don't have enough time to meditate.
Spoiler alert, you do, so let's dive in.
So, meditation is more than just a habit.
It's a practice that invites a deeper sense of intention, effort, and a deep commitment to being present.
Living mindfully doesn't just happen, it's a choice we make moment to moment.
Unlike other goals that we may have, like hitting the gym or reading more, meditation thrives without the weight of specific outcomes.
In fact, letting go of expectations is what allows the practice to truly take root.
To make meditation a part of your life, it's not enough to just squeeze it into an already packed schedule.
it requires carving out meaningful space.
This space not only supports the practice itself, but also reveals what might be distracting you and pulling you away.
As you begin to meditate, you'll discover how the practice can help you prioritize, find balance, and focus on what truly matters.
When I first started meditating, I was one of those when I have time people.
And spoiler alert, I never had time.
My days were packed, and meditation was always the first thing to go.
I didn't have a routine, let alone a dedicated moment to slow down, sit still, and just be.
Naturally I ended up frustrated.
I had heard all the buzz about how amazing meditation could be, less stress, more clarity.
And yet, I wasn't feeling any of it.
I started to wonder if maybe meditation just wasn't my thing.
And then one day I stumbled across a Dharma talk about devotion and the power of creating ritual around your practice.
Something about it just clicked.
It reminded me that we live in a world constantly competing for our attention, where there's always something more important to do than sit quietly for 10 or 15 minutes.
Choosing to meditate isn't just a task, it's a commitment to yourself.
It requires intention, reverence, and a willingness to let go of distractions.
The moment I decided to treat meditation as something sacred, not just a box to check, everything shifted.
My practice stopped feeling like an obligation and started feeling like a gift, one I could give myself every single day.
So I began to take a closer look at how my days were structured, searching for pockets of time I could reclaim, not just to meditate, but also to ease in and out of my practice.
I realized how much time I was losing to things that didn't truly serve me.
Endless scrolling on my phone, another episode of a TV show, or my infamous late night Google rabbit holes.
Bit by bit, I started to reinvest that time into practices that nourished me.
The difference was undeniable, not just in how I meditated, but how I was showing up for life.
I wasn't just fitting meditation in, I was reshaping my relationship with time, myself and the world around me.
So if you're struggling to find time to meditate, take a compassionate inventory of where your time is going.
What can you let go of to make room for what truly matters?
Look at your schedule and intentionally carve out space for your practice.
Reconnect with your why.
Why did you choose to meditate in the first place?
How does it support you?
And how does it ripple out to the people in your life?
Set an intention before you sit, and approach your practice with curiosity and care.
If you can, find someone to share this journey with.
an accountability buddy, a mentor, or a friend who can keep you encouraged and committed.
Remember, meditation isn't just about finding the time, it's about creating the space.
So until next time, take really good care, and I'll see you back here on Radioheadspace.
