But for now, let's get on with the show.
Woo!
Welcome back to Tinker Class, our hands-on crash course in Science Fun 101 for the science seekers and inventoritos of tomorrow.
It's day three of week one, so if you're just joining us for the first time, hit pause and go back and listen to the first two episodes of this week.
Don't worry, we'll still be here when you come back.
This week we're using inspiration from our Wow in the World episode Hug-O-Matic 3000 and the Future of Soft Robotics.
On day one, we had you listen to the episode while jotting down any thoughts, ideas and questions that came to mind.
Yesterday we had you make a list of problems around your home and a list of animals with unique characteristics that could be mimicked or copied to help solve that problem.
And now, for day three, we're ready to begin creating and testing.
Our next two steps in the tinkering process.
Using your plan from yesterday, it's time to bring your idea to life.
We challenge you to search around your home for materials that can mimic the animal characteristics that you plan to use to solve your problem.
For example, geckos have super sticky feet that allow them to climb walls.
Could super sticky tape or Velcro help to mimic this characteristic?
It's important to stick to your plan, even if you start to think it might not work.
There will be plenty of time for improvement after you test.
Remember, I had 2,999 versions of the Hug-O-Matic before it was ready for Guy Raz's final test.
Once you've gathered your mimicking materials, you're ready to test your biomimicry model.
Scientists have to test their models over and over and over again to make sure that their findings are reliable.
This kind of test is called a trial.
And we want you to conduct at least three trials or tests of your model, and be sure to write down what happened in each one.
And then meet us back here tomorrow for day four of Tinker Class, as we get ready to improve our designs and test one more time.
And grown-ups.
