Hi, my name is Andy and welcome to Radio Headspace and a Thursdaymorning.
So this morning I'd like you to take a moment to reflect on how you think about yourself and how you think about others seeingyou.
Essentially, talking about how do you defineyourself?
I don't want you to defineyourself, but rather to reflect on what is that idea you have in your mind of who youare?
Of perhaps how other people see you and that might be a combination ofmany, manyfactors.
It might be the way that youthink, the beliefs that youhave, the opinions youhold.
It might be an expression of yourpassion, your emotions inlife.
It could be an expression of yourskills, yourtalents, the way you present things in theworld.
Or it could be a reflection of what you do in theworld.
Perhaps a career or the people you lookafter, whatever it mightbe.
That idea is not only sort of verysmall, quite sort oflimiting, but it's also sort of veryfixed.
And there's the possibility that over time we can let go of some of those fixedideas.
We can loosen it up a little bit and maybe even go beyond italtogether.
But I come back to that in amoment.
How often have you been in a socialsituation, maybe even a businesssituation, where people have askedyou, so what do youdo?
It's almost the firstquestion.
After sort ofhigh, my name is the firstquestion, what do youdo?
Almost as though for that otherperson, they're trying to workout.
Okay, so who is thisperson?
Where do I put them in mymind?
And whilst in manyways, this is of courseunderstandable.
We're always looking for ways to engage in conversation to find points of mutual interest where we can kind ofconverse, but at the sametime, if we are thinking of ourselves in thatway, if we are thinking about others in thatway, we are ignoring so much of the world and we're not reallyexploring.
There's not a sense of kind of realinterest.
I always loved the difference in sort of the way we might speak to achild.
So what are you likedoing?
First is how we speak to anadult.
So what do youdo? I don't know what age that changes as probably an appropriateage.
Imean, that changes and reasons for why thatchanges.
But wouldn't it be so much nicer if we aresomebody?
So what do you enjoy doing inlife?
The fact of what they actually do to make a living is kind of neither here northere.
I remember back at themonastery, someonefar, far, wise are the me saying that we're not what wedo.
We're not what wesay. We're not even what wethink.
We are so much more thanthat.
Forme, one of the most beneficial things about meditation is learning to rest inawareness.
Yes, it allows us to be lessdistracted.
Yes, it allows us to be more present and everythingelse.
But the thing it allows us to do is to go beyond our thoughts so that we're no longer limited by that definition we have in ourmind.
We're no longer limiting others by that definition that we have in ourmind.
Instead the mind isfree.
We're able to connect with people in a way that doesn't limit or define where there is a sense ofspace, a sense of limitless potential or whatever else we like to think aboutit.
So as much aspossible, bringing a sense of that into yourday.
