Hello, it's time now for CRI's regular feature, Chinese Folk Tales.
I'm Wang Luo.
The Drung people of China have a festival called the Third Day of the Third Month.
The Drung celebrate it by holding song fests in the mountains near their villages.
They also wait for the arrival of Third Sister Liu.
Who is Third Sister Liu, you ask?
Well, it all began about a thousand years ago.
In a small village in southwestern China, there was a poor family by the name of Liu.
One day, the mother dreamed of a pretty oriole that sang beautifully to her one whole night.
Ten months later, she gave birth to a baby girl.
Since she was the third child, she was named Third Sister Liu.
The years passed quickly.
Third Sister Liu grew into the loveliest girl in the area.
She was beautiful, and her singing talents were unparalleled.
Young men followed her whenever she went to the slopes to cut firewood or to the market to buy things.
One year, during the Mid-Autumn Festival, Third Sister Liu noticed a young fellow standing outside her home.
He didn't come to the door, but he also didn't leave.
He was Li Xiao Niu, a poor boy who lived alone in a village.
He asked Third Sister to become his singing teacher.
Third Sister Liu agreed.
Soon, Li Xiao Niu became a frequent visitor to Liu's home.
He learned singing carefully. and often helped Liu with the housework.
Meanwhile, in a neighboring village, there lived a stingy old moneybags called Mo Ren Huai.
He often bullied poor people, so no one liked him.
Hearing of Third Sister's beauty, he sent a matchmaker to ask her to be his concubine.
She immediately rejected his offer.
Mo Ren Huai, unwilling to give up, arranged for three singing masters to challenge Third Sister to a contest.
On their way, the three met a girl washing clothes by the riverbank.
They asked her where they could find Third Sister so they could challenge her to a singing contest.
She's not at home, said the girl.
I'm her younger sister.
Why don't we have a try first?
The three nodded their agreement, so the girl began.
Hearing her singing, the three men could only stare speechlessly at one another as they thought to themselves if her younger sister is so talented, what shall we do if we meet third sister Liu?
Let's go back.
Who was the girl?
She was, of course, Third Sister Liu herself.
Now, Li Xiaoniu's singing lessons were progressing quite well.
Every evening, he would sit with Third Sister Liu on the riverbank, practicing.
Their sweet, happy voices could be heard far away.
When word of their friendship reached the ears of Mo Renhuai, he flew into a rage and vowed to put a stop to it.
One day, Third Sister Liu was cutting firewood on a hill near the village.
She climbed up a huge vine that was hanging from the cliff.
Just then, Muren Huai happened by.
He took out his knife, climbed the cliff, and cut the vine.
Third Sister Liu fell into the river, but she did not die.
People say she climbed back up the hill.
Then, she and Xiao Niu sat on a peak for three days and nights, singing.
On the fourth day, they both disappeared.
The following year, on the third day of the third lunar month, the two were heard singing there again.
Since then, each year, the Drong people celebrate that date.
They sing and they listen for the fairy-like voice of Third Sister Liu.
Well, that's the story about Third Sister Liu.
