A long time ago, in the land we now call Iran, there was a great empire called the Persian Empire.
It was also known as the Achaemenid Empire.
This empire started around 550 BCE. It became one of the largest empires the world had ever seen.
It began with a smart and brave leader named Cyrus the Great.
Cyrus was born around 600 BCE. He became king of a small land called Anshan.
It was part of a larger group of people called the Persians.
Cyrus wanted to unite the people around him.
He started by fighting the Medes, a powerful group nearby.
The Medes and the Persians spoke the same language and had many things in common.
After Cyrus won, he joined the Medes and the Persians together.
This was the beginning of the Persian Empire.
Cyrus kept going. He led his army to fight the rich kingdom of Lydia, which is now part of Turkey.
He won that battle too. Then he turned to Babylon.
Babylon was one of the most famous cities in the world.
It was full of wealth, strong walls, and smart leaders.
But in 539 BCE, Cyrus and his army took the city without a big fight.
The people of Babylon welcomed him. They were tired of their old king.
Cyrus treated them well. He let them keep their temples and their ways of life.
One of the most important things Cyrus did was let people go home.
Many groups of people had been taken from their lands by other kings.
Cyrus said they could return. One of those groups was the Jewish people.
They had been taken to Babylon years earlier by King Nebuchadnezzar.
When Cyrus took Babylon, he told the Jews they could go back to Jerusalem.
He even helped them rebuild their temple.
Because of this, he is remembered kindly in the Bible.
In the book of Isaiah, he is called a great leader chosen by God.
Cyrus made a new kind of empire. Before him, many kings forced people to follow the same religion and culture.
Cyrus was different. He believed that people should be free to follow their own customs.
He thought this would help keep peace in the empire.
This idea worked. People in many lands were happy to live under Persian rule.
They had to pay taxes, but they could keep their own ways of life.
Cyrus also made fair laws. One record of this is called the Cyrus Cylinder.
It was found in Babylon and has writing on it that tells about his rule.
Some people call it the first declaration of human rights.
It said that people could worship as they wished and that cities and temples should be rebuilt. it showed that Cyrus believed in fairness.
After Cyrus died in 530 BCE, his son Cambyses became king. he added Egypt to the empire.
After him, a new king named Darius the Great took over.
Darius made the empire even stronger. He built roads, made new coins, and divided the land into smaller parts called satrapies.
Each satrapy had a governor who helped the king.
Darius also built a great palace city called Persepolis.
It had tall columns and beautiful carvings.
It showed the power and wealth of the Persian Empire.
The Persian Empire was huge. It stretched from the Indus River in the east to the Mediterranean Sea in the west.
It included many different people, Persians, Medes, Babylonians, Egyptians, Greeks, and many others.
They all lived under the rule of the Persian king.
The king was called the King of Kings because he ruled over many other rulers.
The empire had good roads to help people travel and carry messages.
The most famous road was the Royal Road.
Messengers could ride horses and carry news quickly from one end of the empire to the other.
This helped the king know what was happening in all parts of his land.
The Persian army was strong too. It had soldiers from many lands.
They fought with bows, spears and swords.
They also used horses and chariots. The king had special guards called the immortals.
They were always 10,000 in number. If one died, another took his place.
They were brave and loyal. But over time, the empire began to have problems.
Some kings spent too much money. Some governors wanted more power.
In 334 BCE, a young Greek leader named Alexander the Great began to attack.
He won many battles. In 330 BCE, he took over Persepolis.
The Persian Empire came to an end. Even though the empire ended, the ideas of the Persians lived on.
Cyrus the Great is still remembered as a fair and wise king.
People in Iran today still honor him. His tomb is in a place called Pasargadae.
It is simple, but people from all over the world come to see it.
The Persian Empire was one of the first to rule many people in many lands.
But instead of trying to make everyone the same, it showed that people can live together with respect.
That is what made it special. And that is why the story of Cyrus the Great and the Persian Empire is still told today.
