Once upon a time there was a brother and sister named Luke and Nora, who lived in a quiet neighborhood where nothing too exciting ever seemed to happen.
But one winter morning, something did happen.
There was a blizzard that had rolled into town overnight.
It snowed harder in their town than it had in years.
And by the time the sun finally came up the next morning...
Everything outside was buried under the biggest snowfall they had ever seen.
The snow was piled so high the front door wouldn't even open.
Guess what?
Their dad came in and said with a grin.
No school today.
No school?
Luka Norris said as they raced to the window.
Snow day!
Yes!
So they ran all over the house and screamed their heads off for a few minutes until the excitement eventually died down.
And after breakfast they decided to put on their snow gear and they headed into their backyard, where the snow was so deep they had to put on snowshoes or they'd sink right in all the way up to their necks.
Hey, we should build an igloo, Luke said.
Good one, Dad said, thinking that they were both joking.
But then he looked at their faces and saw that they were both dead serious.
Okay, well, I guess good luck.
You guys better get started, Dad said.
So they found one of their mom's old bread pans in the kitchen and decided it would be perfect to use as a snow mold so they could make bricks out of the snow.
So they grabbed it and they got to work.
Luke packed the snow into bricks and then nora carried them across the yard and stacked them carefully, one on top of the other, and they worked hard on it all day and by the end of the day they stood back and looked at the work they had done and realized they didn't just build a little igloo, they built a gigantic one.
It was so big it actually had rooms to walk around inside.
But when they stepped through the entrance, they gasped.
Wait, did we actually make all of this?
Nora asked.
Somehow, without even planning it, they didn't just shape the igloo into different rooms.
There was snow furniture in there too.
Inside the little living room were a set of snow benches and there was a dining area with a snow table and even an upstairs loft made out of icy shelves and a place where they could even spend the night inside the igloo if they wanted to.
It had everything.
The kids had been so hard at work they didn't even realize how much detail they had put into this thing.
Wow, cool, they both said.
But the most surprising part was that in the very back corner there was a staircase made of packed snow that led downstairs.
Wow, there's a basement, Luke said.
Nora scratched her head.
Huh.
I don't even remember making that part.
So they looked at each other.
And then they both started heading down the steps.
And the deeper they went, the colder it got.
And at the very bottom, there was a round, snowy room.
And in the far wall, they saw a hole.
That's right.
There was a tunnel there.
What?
Luke said.
Should we go in it?
Nora whispered.
And they both knew the answer.
One after the other, Luke and Nora crouched down and started crawling into that mysterious tunnel.
And at first it was tight and narrow, but they continued crawling through it.
And it didn't take long until the snowy walls began to widen.
And eventually it got so much wider that they could both stand up.
And they could just walk through the tunnel side by side.
That's right, it was turning into more of a snow cave than a tunnel.
And then...
After walking for what seemed like a long time, up ahead, they both saw it.
There was a light.
A soft glow was shining at the end of the snow cave.
Hey, do you see that?
Luke asked.
And as they continued walking toward the light, they realized that this cave was actually leading them somewhere.
And when they reached the end of the cave, What they saw next was the last thing they ever expected to see.
But that's a story for another day.
