How has Taylor Swift changed the USA?
Thanks for asking.
She's one of the most influential women in the world.
Taylor Swift, a country star in the United States, who's become a global pop star, is shattering all records.
She's been named the Personality of 2023 and has won Album of the Year for the record-breaking fourth time.
What does this have to do with politics?
In November 2024, Joe Biden, the President of the United States, is standing for re-election.
His main opponent is still Donald Trump.
What does Taylor Swift have to do with all this?
Well, she has a considerable say in the outcome of the election.
According to a 2024 survey by Redfield and Wilton Strategies, a British company specialising in market research, 18 of voters, or nearly one in five Americans, said they would be more likely, or even significantly more likely, to vote for the candidate the singer supported, meaning her choice could tip the balance in the American elections.
In 2020, she endorsed Joe Biden, but it remains to be seen whether she'll renew that endorsement in 2024.
However, she has encouraged her Instagram followers to register to vote.
The results?
In the day following its publication, 35,000 people registered.
That's what we call the Taylor Swift effect.
Does the Taylor Swift effect only apply to politics?
Far from it.
Even the American Central Bank acknowledges the existence of the Swift effect.
The singer is said to be capable of boosting the US economy.
As soon as she organises a concert, tens of thousands of tickets are sold, sometimes at very high prices.
Each time, all these fans will come to the venue and the local economy gets a boost.
In one year, she performed 68 times in the United States, generating over 2 billion in economic spin-offs.
Wow, that's impressive.
In January 2024, she was the victim of a deepfake whereby AI-generated sexual images of her circulated on X.
Unfortunately, celebrity deepfakes are not uncommon.
But this time, it caused a tidal wave of change.
The images remained online for 17 hours before the social network decided to intervene.
And the White House reacted.
Spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre had this to say.
Social networks have an important role to play in enforcing their own rules to prevent the spread of such misinformation.
What is happening is very alarming, so we're going to do what we can to solve this problem.
Taylor Swift, more than anyone, was able to push the government into finally taking action.
According to O1net, a bill entitled Preventing Deepfakes of Intimate Images Act, designed to tighten the rules of deepfakes, is currently before the House Judiciary Committee.
There you have it.
