Markets closed mixed after an extremely volatile day that sent US stocks on a rollercoaster ride.
Traders searched for any sign that President Donald Trump's tariffs could be negotiated or halted.
Stocks opened in bear market territory, but surged an hour later on rumors that the Trump administration may pause tariffs, but the White House called it, quote, fake news.
Despite signs that some trading partners, including the EU, might be willing to negotiate with Trump, he'd threaten to slap another 50 percent tariff on China if they don't remove their 34 percent additional retaliatory tariff on U .S. imports by tomorrow.
It's the only chance our country will have to reset the table, because no other president and would be willing to do what I'm doing or to even go through it.
He made those comments sitting alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the Oval Office today.

The Supreme Court temporarily paused the midnight deadline to return a Maryland man mistakenly deported to El Salvador.
The court agreed to a request from President Donald Trump to give both sides more time to make their arguments.
Chief Justice John Roberts has granted the, quote, administrative stay on his own.
The move will extend the deadline until the court hands down a more fulsome decision, probably within a few days.
The decision to temporarily pause the case means the Maryland man Kilmar Armando Abrego -Garcia will remain at a prison in El Salvador for now.
Two former top federal labor protection officials, appointed by former President Joe Biden, have been reinstated to their posts by the full DC Circuit Court of Appeals, at least for now.
In a 7 to 4 decision, the full appeals court wiped away a previous ruling that allowed President Trump to fire the officials Kathy Harris and Gwen Wilcox.
Harris is the chairwoman of the Merit Systems Protection Board and Wilcox is a member of the National Labor Relations Board. With these two officials returning to their posts, a quorum has been restored at the two agencies, allowing them to function at full strength in process cases involving federal employment disputes.
But this isn't the final say.
Many legal observers expect the matter to head to the Supreme Court.
Today's ruling comes amid a lengthy dispute over Trump's ability to fire leaders from independent government agencies.
More women could die in pregnancy and childbirth due to quote unprecedented aid cuts, according to a warning from the World Health Organization.
A report released by UN agencies says maternal deaths declined by 40 percent globally from 2000 to 2023.
But in a statement released with the report, the WHO said it expects that number to go up.
The WHO said the sudden loss of funding has forced countries to, quote, roll back vital services for maternal, newborn and child health, close clinics and layoff health workers.
