Today is day 10.
Here's the truth that surprises so many high achievers.
And that is that always being super serious does not make you look like senior leadership material.
I know it's crazy.
But the reality is that people that take their job seriously and that are really into the work they can come across as tense unapproachable overloaded, control freak.
It's just not always a great reputation.
Leaders who rise the fastest aren't necessarily the most competent, as I'm sure you have noticed.
But what is attractive in senior leadership is a sense of ease, a sense of confidence that's not forced.
And it's not that you are tense because you're drowning in work.
If you feel like you're drowning in the work, which is going to happen time to time.
That's something to navigate, not to be talking about.
Okay, so today's day 10 tip is to lighten up by 10%, right?
Not that you're going to become a professional comedian.
You're not going to be a clown or goofy, but a more relaxed face, faster to smile, easier to laugh.
More friendly expression.
And that also means more chit-chat, more little bit asking things about other people.
Because this is the reality, especially in older companies, larger companies, these more established companies.
Senior leadership is a little bit like belonging to a club, right?
And it's hard to make it to the top leadership level in a large, established company, especially when the company has been around a long time.
So these senior people have gone through a lot together in a sense, and they have a sense of camaraderie.
So if you're just always serious, they're like, oh, what a great pack mule we have.
Let's give this person more work.
But you're not signaling that you're ready to join their rank.
They need to feel like you belong.
And so by lightening up, that little shift will change how others treat you.
They will talk to you more.
That's a good sign.
Conversations can get easier, especially the you know, non-essential conversations, and then eventually you'll be trusted with bigger opportunities.
Because when you're easier to be around, you become easier to follow.
So I want you to think about ease as your new executive edge, all right?
That's great news, right?
You just loosen up a little bit, lighten up a little bit, And I hope you have a fantastic day.
I will catch you tomorrow.
Tomorrow is about how to introduce yourself in the professional context.
Catch you later.
