Why do some stroke victims wake up with a foreign accent?
Thanks for asking. The idea might seem like something out of a fantasy, but Foreign Accent Syndrome is a genuine, albeit very rare, neurological condition.
It sees a person begin to speak with an accent different to the one they had prior to having a stroke, one which makes them sound like they come from an entirely different country.
Since the first case was discovered in France in 1907, there have only been about 100 documented cases worldwide according to the Cleveland Clinic.
But certain cases have attracted the attention of the media and scientific researchers alike.
One dates back to 1941 in Oslo, Norway during a period of German occupation.
Attacks by the British RAF saw a 30 -year -old Norwegian woman named Astrid sustain injuries on the left side of her head.
Several days later, she regained consciousness, but those around her detected a German -sounding accent when she spoke.
That sadly led to her being rejected by her fellow Norwegians.
What exactly happens to the brain in such cases?
Foreign accent syndrome can occur following certain types of brain injuries, such as those caused by a stroke or severe migraines.
About 15 % of cases are due to head trauma.
It can also be caused by neurological conditions like multiple sclerosis or a tumor.
Some cases have been reported after brain infections or surgeries.
In short, these incidents affect specific regions of the brain associated with speech and language.
It's important to note that people affected by it don't wake up speaking a new language.
Rather, they speak their own language, but with the pronunciation, intonation, and speech rhythm change of a foreign person.
Essentially the brain alters the motor patterns of speech. Another example from 2006 saw a 54 year old Australian woman develop a French accent after a car accident.
How serious can the syndrome be?
The intensity of the change can vary from one patient to another.
It may last a few weeks, or several years.
Of course there can be real mental health consequences for the person affected.
It can potentially lead to depression, anxiety, and a fear of not being taken seriously.
The rarity of the condition contributes to its mystery and explains why there's so little scientific literature on the topic.
That means it's particularly difficult to get a proper diagnosis.

They can range from medication, to speech therapy or psychological counselling.
Research has shown that the resulting foreign accent is often detected by others but not necessarily by the speaker themselves.
These days, the disorder is still the subject of neurological and linguistic studies aimed at better understanding how brain injuries can cause a person's accent to change.
