Why do I need a Schultz hour in my weekly routine?
Thanks for asking.
As Ronald Reagan's US Secretary of State during the 1980s, George Schultz played a key role in bringing an end to the decades-old Cold War.
He helped build relations with USSR leader Mikhail Gorbachev, as well as countries in the Asia-Pacific region.
In 1989, Shultz was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his services, the United States' highest civilian honour.
He passed away in February 2021. having lived to the ripe old age of 100.
But before he did, he shared one of the secrets behind his productivity and difficult decision-making the Schultz Hour.
And it's something a lot of us could do with in this modern age.
It sounds like it could be a TV show.
So what is it actually?
In 2017, Schultz sat down with senior New York Times writer David Leonhardt for an interview with He revealed that, as Secretary of State, he set aside one hour every Friday afternoon for quiet reflection.
This involved shutting himself off in his office with a notepad and pen and telling his secretary.
The only two people who could interrupt him were his wife and the President.
After being told the story, Leonhardt penned an opinion piece entitled You're Too Busy, You Need a Schatzauer, in which he extolled the virtues of such an approach.
Indeed, we've got a lot of distractions in our lives, given how over-connected we are.
As Leonhard put it in his article, there's always a new status update to be read, a new photograph to be taken, a new sports score or Trump outrage to be checked.
And we tend to overestimate the importance of new information simply because it's available and flashing out at us from our smartphone screens.
It's the same in the world of work.
If we're constantly reacting to immediate issues, it's hard to be strategic or think proactively.
Being constantly active isn't actually the most productive way to operate.
Our creative capacity benefits a lot from taking the distractions away for a period of time.
It allows our minds to move from task positive to task negative mode, which is conducive to creativity, insight and problem solving.
But it's more than just a productivity hack.
The Schultz Hour can also be spent reflecting on our personal lives, relationships and sense of fulfilment.
How can I go about creating my own Schultz Hour?
Even if your boss isn't the President of the United States, like Schultz, you could still stand to benefit.
So try carving out an hour per week for thinking alone.
If it's hard to find an hour-long slot in between work and family life, start with 15 minutes or half an hour.
It's still better than nothing.
It has to be a regular fixture in your calendar though.
The most important thing is to turn off all notifications, whether it's instant messaging, social media, emails or calls.
In fact, you may as well activate flight mode on your phone and turn your PC off.
Weather permitting, you could even go out and leave the electronics behind, sitting in a park with your notebook.
It's a little like you're calling a meeting with yourself, with its very own agenda, objectives and solutions.
Don't drown yourself in a huge list of questions in one go though.
Try to think of one main situation per week and take the time to consider it carefully, without putting any undue pressure on yourself.
There you have it.
Now you know why you need a Schultz hour.
