What are the secrets of a successful, lat couple?
Thanks for asking.
Now the idea might seem inconceivable to some, but these days more and more people are
choosing to be in lat relationships.
The lat part of the term stands for Living Alone Together, which means that lat couples
are in a committed romantic relationship, but each person maintains their own private
life and space.
Just how common is that?
Well, back in 2011, a research team began a multi-method study looking into how prominent
lat couples were in the UK.
They went on to publish their findings in a research briefing in 2013, showing that 9%
of adults in the UK are in a lat couple.
That was backed up by a study published in January 2020 by Emeritus Professor Simon Duncan
from the University of Bradford.
His study suggested that as many as 25% of adults in relationships had a latter arrangement,
which equated to 9% of all adults.
And it's not just a popular lifestyle choice for teenagers or couples in their early 20s,
but Professor Duncan found that 57% of lat couples were aged 25 or over.
What's the appeal of a latter arrangement?
Talking to the telegraph shortly after releasing the findings of his study in 2020, Professor
Duncan said living apart together supposedly gives people all the advantages of autonomy,
doing what you want in your own space, maintaining pre-existing local arrangements and friendships,
as well as the pleasures of intimacy with a partner.
People who adopt this lifestyle often feel they get to enjoy the best parts of their relationship,
like fun outings and cherished moments with their partner, while avoiding the routine
that can sometimes set in.
When living together, partners become an integral part of each other's daily life and space,
making it harder to find moments of solitude.
The lat lifestyle helps balance personal and relationship life, reducing areas of potential
conflict related to daily cohabitation, such as household chores, some couples even
choose to live together but have separate bedrooms, each maintaining their own private space.
Are you saying people in lat couples were always argued less?
Well, not necessarily.
Living in a lat couple certainly requires careful consideration and, most importantly, open
communication within the couple.
The lifestyle needs to be a mutual choice, with both partners feeling satisfied with the
arrangement and it's not suitable for everyone.
Some people need to be more present in their partner's daily life and vice versa.
The lat lifestyle might seem insufficient to some and could be perceived as a lack of commitment
or support.
The Telegraph article I mentioned earlier also suggested that most lat couples live relatively
close together and during constant contact through text, Facebook, FaceTime and other messaging
platforms and virtually all expect monogamous fidelity.
Each partner must clearly express their needs and desires regarding independence.
This includes how they envision spending time together.
To avoid misunderstandings, it may be helpful to establish certain rules about meeting times
and respecting each other's space.
