Welcome to Before Breakfast, a production of iHeartRadio.
Good morning. This is Laura.
Welcome to the Before Breakfast podcast. Today's tip is that when you are having a pleasant moment, try to linger in it.
If you are enjoying time with a loved one or an experience that is interesting or fun, don't pull yourself away too fast unless you truly have to.
When you can, stay a while and savor it.
I'm sure many of us have had the experience of having a lovely lunch with a friend, but then feeling like we should get back to our desks even if we don't have anything scheduled at 1pm.
Or we are sitting outside enjoying the nighttime sounds when we decide we need to get back inside to do the laundry.
We're wandering around an art museum and we didn't tell people we'd be back at a specific time but probably we should rush back all the same, right?
right? So often those of us with full lives feel pulled to things, our desks, our chores, our screens, our family members, even if they are entirely safe and happy in someone else's care.
But here's an idea.
If you are doing something truly enjoyable and you feel this pull, full, even without a specific reason, resisted.
Unless you actually have something you need to do right away, encourage yourself to stay a while.
Give yourself a few extra minutes.
Linger. It is so easy to hurry from one scheduled commitment or task to another.
And there are days when we definitely have to keep up that fast pace.
but when it is possible maybe we can try savoring things and not rushing there's a famous scene in the odyssey when odysseus is determined not to be seduced off his course by the entrancing songs of the sirens he has the sailors on his boat tie him to the mast so that he can enjoy hearing the siren song without letting it draw him away way.
Busy folks sometimes have that experience in reverse.
Whereas Odysseus hears a siren song that tempts him toward pleasure, when we are enjoying a pleasant moment, we are often tempted away by the siren song of chores or other perceived duties.
But we don't have to have that happen.
When you are savoring a special moment, and lash yourself to the mast so you're not drawn away too soon.
Remind yourself to linger, to stay a while.
Tell yourself, this is wonderful, and I choose to enjoy it.
You can't linger forever, and there are things you need to do and want to do.
But be sure you are moving towards something and not just succumbing to the sense that you should always be doing something else.
In the meantime, this is Laura.

Parents, quick question.
When is the last time you won snack time?
The other day I handed my son a perfectly portioned Pinterest -level snack, and he traded it for a Mott's applesauce pouch. I'm not mad, just impressed.
And that's why Mott's no -sugar -added applesauce pouches are perfect to keep on hand.
They're made with real apples, packed in a super easy pouch, perfect for tossing in a lunchbox, keeping in the car, or grabbing as you're running out the door.
Plus, they're a good source of vitamin C, and kids love them.
Win -win. Make sure your kid wins snack time with Motts.
