Welcome to Before Breakfast, a production of iHeartRadio.
Good morning, this is Laura.
Welcome to the Before Breakfast podcast.
Today's tip is to print more photos.
Most of our photos exist in the digital space these days.
And for many images, that can be fine.
But we should still choose special ones to give a physical form.
Printed photos can become our most cherished possessions, helping us relive memories long after those eras have faded into the past.
I am old enough to remember when we didn't have photos of every moment in our lives.
Probably for a lot of teenage shenanigans, that is a good thing.
But in any case, you would take photos of special events and have to wait a while to get them printed and returned.
With no way to review the images ahead of time, some you thought would be great, were duds.
But some weren't. And since they existed in physical form, you would often put them somewhere you would look.
These days we take photos constantly, 50 images to get the exact right tilt of the head.
But then you share the best online and move on.
There is a lack of permanence here.
One of my most treasured possessions is a series of photos of my children from 2018 that we printed up and framed.
My two -year -old is aware of how special these are to me.
The other day he told me he wanted to show me something.
And he took me to the wall where the photos are displayed.
He noted a problem.
He wasn't there. Because of course he wasn't born yet when the photos were taken and framed.
But we took family photos this fall and I had the photographer take many pictures of my little guy.
I printed up and framed one of them.
And it is going up on the wall soon.
My toddler knows that I have thousands of pictures of him on my phone.
But even he, less than three years old, knew there was something more special about the printed and framed variety.
It is not challenging to print photos.
There are lots of companies that can still do this for you.
My family has used Shutterfly for many prints.
Including some we print up on mugs and ornaments and in photo books.
I have started using Framebridge as well for bigger pictures.
You can send in a high -resolution image and then choose from their framing and matting options.
This can honestly be a less than ten minute process for many things.
Now, creating photo books might take a bit longer, but maybe not much longer.
The biggest part of that project is probably choosing the photos.
I agree that this can be intimidating.
Which is one reason my family fell a bit behind on our yearly photo books.
We made 2019 and then, well, it is now 2022.
But a rather brilliant solution recently presented itself.
My daughter shares my Apple ID for her iPad.
And so she had access to my photo library.
She went in to choose the photos from 2020 that she liked.
And Shutterfly has a function where they arrange the photos in a reasonable layout.
My daughter put in captions, and all I had to do was go in and edit a tiny bit.
If you have older kids who enjoy pictures and memory keeping, they might like to take on this project too.
Or if things are really crazy, you can hire someone for a few hours.
I know a lot of people like chat books because they print up your photos from Instagram.
And for many people, these are already the highlights.
But whatever you use, be sure to print up some photos.
We seldom manage to go back through our photo libraries with the specific purpose of highlighting good memories.
It is all just jumbled in there.
Including the 10 other photos where you didn't like the angle of your chin from that special occasion.
Printing photos forces some choices.
You choose the best, and then you honor those photos by putting them somewhere you can see.
Every time you see the photos, you will remember good times and can pause and be grateful.
That is a lot of blessing for very little money or time.
In the meantime, this is Laura.
Thanks for listening, and here is to making the most of our time.
