What is Ramsey -Hunt syndrome?
The disorder affecting Justin Bieber.
Thanks for asking. In June 2022, Canadian superstar singer, Justin Bieber, took to Instagram to reveal that he has a rare neurological disorder called Ramsey -Hunt Syndrome.
He explained some of the symptoms he was experiencing, which were clearly visible in the video post. As you can see, this eye is not blinking.
I can't smile on this side of my face.
This nostril will not move.
So there's full paralysis in this side of my face.
Bieber took a break from his world tour and would do the same just a few months later, again using social media to tell fans about suffering with exhaustion and needing to make health the priority.
After trying to restart the tour, he would eventually be forced to cancel his remaining concert dates.
How long have we known about this syndrome?
It was discovered in 1907 by American neurologist James Ramsey Hunt.
The syndrome is caused by the same virus behind chicken pox, the Varicella zoster virus.
Even after chicken pox clears up, VZV still lives in your nerves and can sometimes reactivate many years later.
Ramsey Hunt syndrome actually comes on when a shingles outbreak affects the facial nerve.
What are its symptoms?
As Bieber mentioned on Instagram, Ramsey Hunt syndrome can cause facial paralysis.
Before that, there's usually a rash that reaches the internal and external parts of the ear, which can be painful.
Facial paralysis can occur alongside hearing loss.
It's rare for the whole face to be affected.
It's usually only one side, as was the case with Justin Bieber.
Other symptoms may include vomiting, fever and dizziness.
Can you cure Ramsey Hunt syndrome?
Before being able to treat the syndrome, it's important to first establish a diagnosis.
This requires a neurological assessment or an initial ENT consultation.
A treatment can be given for the varicella virus which should be taken for about 10 days.
If the individual is cured of chicken pox, the virus will still be present and dormant.
The causes of reactivation still remain unclear.
In any case, it's recommended to take a course of treatment to prevent the virus from growing.
In more extreme cases of facial paralysis, rehabilitation can be prescribed.
Although the numbers remain unclear, according to the National Organization for Rare Disorders, just 5 out of 100 ,000 people develop Ramsey -Hunt syndrome each year in the United States.
