Hello and welcome back to Word Up.
You might be studying for your IELTS exam, or maybe you just want to improve your vocabulary or your English.
Well, this is a great game for you.
It's a lot of fun.
It's fast paced and it's exciting.
So the quick rules.
I have ten cards in my hand.
On the card is a word and the player has to guess at least eight out of ten words in two minutes to win twenty dollars.
But this time there's a switch over happening.
I'm going to be the player.
And if I get eight out of 10 words, my fellow participant will get to keep the $20.
So now it's time to switch seats.
I have just arrived in the player's seat.
I am sweating.
Is it hot in here?
I can't wait.
I'm excited, but I am very nervous.
I think we're going to do well, but it will be a test.
All right.
First one.
When you go to jail, you commit a... Crime.
Correct.
It's not warm, it's... Cold.
Yep.
There's a start and there's a... Finish.
End.
An end exam might be called a... Final exam.
Yep.
A part of your brain... Cerebral.
That lets you reflect on... The past.
Cortex.
It has a function, not the memory.
Not below, it's above.
In court, someone goes on Parole.
They go on the jury.
They can go up to the stand.
They make a statement.
They're a witness.
I love that one.
When you are really knowledgeable about a subject, you are a... Professor or expert.
People do law at a law... School.
Firm.
Yeah.
When you go somewhere to see someone, you are... Visit.
Yeah.
Okay.
To lay some ground rules, you... Order.
You want someone to know something.
You convince them.
You take the stand.
More like a background knowledge.
You give them context.
You lay the rules.
You give them context.
You set the scene.
Okay.
Next one, again in court.
You go on, that's the phrase, the word.
You go on, you go on, or okay.
When you go to compete in a sport, you want to get on the team, you have to compete, or you have to audition, or you have to you have to um trial yes, okay.
Final one.
Well, how well did we do?
You got 9 out of 10.
9 out of 10.
So this $20, the smell of success is yours.
Thank you.
Probably incredibly dirty.
So don't do that at home, people.
I will be washing my hands.
Wow.
Thank you so much.
I think that was great teamwork.
So let's talk about the words we did get.
So the first one was crime.
Nice.
I thought that was pretty, it's pretty easy.
I had a bit of time at the start to prep that one.
So that was quite good.
Number two, cold.
Yes, the warm and the cold.
It's always good to use the opposite.
I guess the synonyms would be if it was chilly.
You could say that.
Or winter.
Winter it is, yeah.
Number three, final.
Final, yes.
It was a bit tricky.
I was like start end start end, and then we got there in the end we said finish, and then you use the exam.
Yeah, final exam yeah, so that was good memory.
Oh yes, that was to do with the brain.
Yeah, I definitely could have described that better.
I went down the like the route of describing literal parts of the brain, the cortex cerebral.
Very knowledgeable about that but yeah, that one was tough.
Um number five above oh yeah, and you use below yeah yeah, i guess if you were going to go the synonym you could say something on top of maybe yeah, um number eight expert expert.
Yes, i said professor first, but expert in the field yeah, so when you know some a lot about something, that's what you said, which is great.
Um firm yeah law firm law, firm.
Yeah, i guess another way we could have gone is um firm people.
When, maybe massages, they say do you want it white or do you want it firm?
But i think the law firm was the easiest way.
Yeah, um number 10 visit.
Visit yeah, i struggled not to say that word when i was describing because it's hard, but going to see someone yeah visit yeah, going to see someone.
Um trial Yeah, that was the one that took me a little while.
I think I was just thinking about things in a court of law, but trial.
But then when you use the sport, that was really helpful.
It was tough to move on to a different topic.
I was just focused on court for a while, but then I moved on.
And the one that we didn't get was establish.
Oh, establish.
Yeah.
And I think I in my head mixed up that one was still had the law.
I was still going down the law path.
Establish.
Yeah, that's a tricky one.
Yeah.
Well, well done.
Well, thank you so much for watching.
I had a lot of fun on the other side of the seat.
Please, if you have something to say or you have a description of your own, please put them in the comments.
We love to read them.
Well, thank you.
Until next time.
