useful terms at MintMobile .com How does harm reduction make drug use safer?
Thanks for asking. Drug use among young people is nothing new.
But in recent years, it has reached record levels according to research published in 2022 by youth charity The Mix.
They found that the number of 16 to 25 year olds taking drugs had increased by 50 % since the previous year, reaching 1 in 3.
That was true for usage of all Class A, B, or C drugs, with the use of methadone, cannabis, amphetamines and tranquilisers having risen the most. So you see, despite being illegal these substances are widely consumed.
That's why some charities and associations have put in place harm reduction programmes to help minimise the risks associated with drug use at parties and festivals.
One example of a charity doing that is Cycare UK, who've been operating for over a decade and offer services at events of all sizes.
Now I want to talk about Cycare UK today because we're in the middle of Podcastthon. It's an annual charity event which sees podcasters come together to highlight different organizations, their work, and their impacts.
So what are the main risks of drug use at social events?
Well it's no secret that drug use comes with inherent risks, and that's particularly true in nightlife settings.
Alcohol might be legal and more socially accepted than other substances, but that doesn't mean it's any less dangerous.
Beyond the risk of alcohol poisoning and overdoses, certain substances can cause serious long -term health issues.
For example, prolonged ketamine use can impair cognitive function and hallucinogens can sometimes lead to lasting mental health disturbances.
Regular drug users might experience hallucinations or hearing voices even while completely sober.
On top of that, drugs and alcohol can alter a person's judgment and perception, leading to dangerous behaviour, an increased risk of accidents and impaired ability to give or receive consent.
Well, they bring a caring and compassionate approach to the needs of all those attending a festival or other event.
They set up safe spaces where they provide useful tools like informational flyers, breathalyzers, earplugs and condoms all aimed at promoting safer partying.
Their volunteers on the front line are fully trained in assisting people going through drug -related psychedelic experiences.
That's important given the mental crises and altered states of consciousness that psychedelic drugs can induce.
What's more, they educate people about the substances they may be consuming and the principles of harm reduction.
And in a non -judgmental way too, the aim is to provide clear information about the effects of drugs, their composition, and the legal risks involved in carrying or using them.
