What is a performative man?
This trend that has taken over TikTok.
Thanks for asking.
A matcha in hand, a tote bag slung over the shoulder, black nail polish neatly applied, a carefully styled mullet and a copy of Sally Rooney peeking from his back pocket.
That's the look of the so-called performative man.
In the past few weeks, this character has turned into a full-blown meme, with videos racking up millions of views.
On the surface he checks all the boxes of a deconstructed man, but in reality he often represents a slickly packaged version of Masculinity 20.
What does that mean exactly?
In theory, it sounds like progress.
The performative man borrows from the aesthetic, often coded as feminine, embraces a polished style and references feminist thinkers.
He's a new archetype of masculinity born on social media.
But scratch beneath the surface and the picture shifts.
This self-styled champion of women's rights can prove far less safe than he appears.
His progressive image is sometimes just that, an image.
He waves around his copy of bell hooks without ever having read it.
He interrupts women to explain subjects that directly concern them and reproduces the very toxic behaviors he claims to reject.
In short, he doesn't aim to be deconstructed, only to look that way.
So how can you spot the difference between performance and sincerity?
That's where it gets tricky.
TikTok users often respond with humour, turning the trope into parody.
Best performative man.
Contests have even popped up in places like Seattle, where participants were quizzed on women's rights, menstrual health and history of suffrage.
Most didn't pass the test.
So how do you actually become an ally without overdoing it?
The answer is refreshingly simple.
Sincerity.
Being a good ally isn't about showing off, but about listening, learning and staying humble.
It's not about pretending to know everything, but about acknowledging what you don't.
Reading feminist literature isn't the problem, quite the opposite.
What matters is not treating it like an accessory or making it a tool.
The real goal is to approach feminism with empathy, curiosity and respect, without expecting recognition in turn and, above all, to understand that, no matter how much you read or how progressive you try to appear, you cannot speak in place of those who live the experience every day there.
