Streets are empty and shops are closed in Damascus after rebels seize full control of the Syrian capital.
Former President Bashar al -Assad has fled to Moscow.
The Russian Foreign Ministry says al -Assad left Syria and gave orders for a peaceful transfer of power.
Haidar Kazwini has more from Damascus.
The prime minister of Syria has ordered all the ministers who stayed in Damascus, who didn't leave Damascus, who didn't leave Syria, to come to their work, to maybe caretaking, to make the services being provided because people now they need the services, they need the bread, they need the food items
to be back to the market.
So he insisted on the health minister and the minister of domestic trade to be on duty.
He said earlier that he is staying in Damascus in a video actually published on his social media page.
I am in my house when I have no left.
And this is because of me belonging to this country and not knowing any other country to be home.
This country can be a normal country, a country that views good relations with neighbours and with the world without entering into any regional alliances or blocs.
But we will leave this matter to any new leadership to be chosen by the Syrian people and we are ready to cooperate with new leadership and facilitate what they need so the various governments' vows can be transferred smoothly and systematically in a way to preserve the state's facilities.
Actually, this government now is something like we can describe it as caretaking government.
The prime minister actually made a national attitude to stay with his people, to help the Syrians in this critical moment.
He didn't leave Syria.
This was welcomed too much by most of the Syrians, although they are pro or anti -Syrian government.
That was Haidar Kazwini reporting.
The seizure of Damascus by Syrian rebel forces has ended a four -year stalemate between Bashar al -Assad and the opposition.
It also ended over five decades of the Assad family rule.
Ida Waringa has more on the extraordinary past week in Syria.
Eight days. That's all it took for Syrian rebels to gain control of three of the country's major cities.
On November 30th, rebel forces said that they had entered Aleppo for the first time since 2016.
Verified footage showed them in front of the city's international airport.
The Syrian military, backed by Russian fighter jets, responded with a volley of strikes on Aleppo and the surrounding area.
However, there were no further strikes on the city after December 2nd.
This allowed the rebels to push south, towards the city of Hama.
Syrian military forces, demanding more pay, did not put up much of a fight.
Under pressure, Assad ordered an immediate salary increase for conscripted forces on December 4th.
That, however, did little to push back the rebels.
On December 5th, fighters took control of Hama, releasing prisoners from Assad's infamous prisons.
By December 7th, anti -Assad fighters had swept through the southern city of Dara, taking control of the city center.
Some rebel fighters then surged north towards Damascus, while others pushed south towards Jordan.
This led to Jordanian authorities closing the Jaberna Sea border crossing, the only passenger and commercial route into Syria.
By Sunday, December 8th, Syrian rebel forces said they had captured the capital, Damascus.
Anti -Assad fighters are also entering the strategic city of Homs, a move that would cut Damascus off from the coast.
President Bashar al -Assad, whose family has ruled Syria for more than 50 years, is toppled from power.
And that was Ida Waringa reporting.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says his troops have seized a buffer zone in the Golan Heights, established by a 1974 ceasefire agreement with Syria.
Israeli war planes also carried out strikes against the former Syrian government's military and security sites in and around Damascus.
Jonathan Regev has more from Tel Aviv.
The Israeli forces have gone past the ceasefire lines.
Israeli forces have now taken the Syrian summit of Mount Hermon.
Mount Hermon, of right on the Syrian -Israeli border.
And the Israeli forces have taken the Syrian outpost.
Who did they take it from?
It's quite a big question, as the Syrian army is gone.
The rebels have not gone up there.
So at least for now, this this place is taken over by the Israeli army.
Who will they give it back to?
Will they ever give it back to?
Those are very big questions.
Israel is not waiting for any developments in Syria, taking action before anything happens.
Israeli forces already entered the buffer zone.
This is an area where rebels clash with UN forces.
And Israel wants to make sure that no rebel forces come in there.
The buffer zone is an area that exists since 1974, 50 years since the end of the Yom Kippur War.
Both countries, Israel and Syria, usually respected the the sub -buffer zone.
But now, of course, it's a different issue.
We're not speaking about the Syrian army anymore, the Syrian state anymore, but rebels, which Israel does not really know where they're heading.
That was Jonathan Regev reporting.
Rebels in Damascus have stormed the Iranian embassy following their capture of the Syrian capital.
Aeson Kevani has more.
Iran's embassy in Damascus has been attacked by the rebels and armed forces.
We have footage showing the windows broken and many documents and papers scattered around and the properties of the Iranian embassy in Syria, either destroyed or stolen.
According to unconfirmed reports, the Iranians tap up the Iranian, the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, or the IRGC, evacuated their bases around Damascus since Friday and left Syria.
Now Iran has lost this important platform in the region.
Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Aruchchi has blamed the U .S.
and Israel for the turmoil in Syria.
And Aruchchi says after Gaza, they went to they went for Lebanon and now they have gone for Syria.
Iranian Foreign Minister warned that this will not be confined to Syria as the whole region has been threatened.
Iran is really unhappy with what is happening in Syria after all.
Tehran and Damascus were strategic allies in the Middle East for decades.
Syria was the main front for Iran in the region where it could logistically and militarily support the resistance groups including Hezbollah in Lebanon as well as Hamas and other Palestinian groups.
That was Aeson Kevani reporting.
UN Secretary General Antoni Guterres says the future of Syria is a matter for its people to determine.
He also says there's much work to be done to ensure an orderly political transition to renewed institutions.
The UN chief says such transition should meet the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people.
Guterres reiterated his call for calm and avoiding violence while protecting the rights of all Syrians.
He also urged respect for the inviability of diplomatic and consular premises and personnel in efforts to restore Syria's sovereignty, unity, independence, and territorial integrity.
Guterres says the UN remains committed to helping Syrians build a country where reconciliation, justice, freedom, and prosperity are shared realities for all.
China has called for efforts to find a political solution to help restore stability and order in Syria as soon as possible.
Foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Neng says all parties concerned should be guided by the principles of responsibility for long -term and fundamental interests of the Syrian people when looking for a political solution.
She adds that the future of Syria should be determined by its people.
Egypt stressed that all parties in Syria need to preserve the capabilities of the state and national institutions.
Qatar says it's pushing for a unified Arab position on Syria.
The European Commission president says the bloc will help rebuild a Syrian state that protects all minorities.
US forces have launched dozens of airstrikes against militant camps of the Islamic State Group.
President Joe Biden says former President Bashar al -Assad should be held accountable and that the US will engage with all Syrian groups to help rebuild the country.
Poppy Imputting has more.
US President Joe Biden reacted to the rebel takeover in Syria Sunday making an address from the Roosevelt Room in the White House.
He made a number of key points including reiterating his support for allies in the region including Jordan, Lebanon, and Israel committing to sending senior officials to the region in the coming days.
Biden also reiterated the protection he would supply to troops that are still in Syria 900 US troops still in the south of the country.
Another key point that Biden stressed was the importance in his view of engaging Syrians in a transition to a new government to achieving the aim of having a sovereign and independent Syria.
Let's listen. It's a moment of historic opportunity for the long -suffering people of Syria to build a better future for their proud country.
It's also a moment of risk and uncertainty.
As we all turn to the question of what comes next, the United States will work with our partners and the stakeholders in Syria to help them seize an opportunity to manage the risks.
In his address Biden also mentioned that on Sunday morning the United States undertook precision airstrikes on targets within Syria against the Islamic State.
Important to remember of course that the rebel takeover was helmed by HTS which is an umbrella for a number of rebel groups that have different values or multi -factioned and the HTS themselves are designated by the United States as a terrorist group so they're very keen with the fall of the Bashar al
-Assad government to ensure that there isn't a power vacuum in which the likes of Islamic State and Al -Qaeda could gain prominence once again.
In terms of what's happening on the ground, many Syrians are keen to return to their homes.
Over 14 million were displaced over the course of more than a decade of the civil war in Syria north of six million displaced and fled the country.
In the last few days as the rebel takeover continued thousands more left their homes.
The United Nations keen to ensure human security is restored mentioning that they are committed to humanitarian assistance including securing food and fuel for the Syrian people.
Gear Peterson the UN special envoy to Syria saying on Sunday morning in a statement to those displaced this moment renews the vision of returning to homes once lost to families separated by war the beginnings of reunions bring hope to those unjustly detained and the families of the detained and the missing
the opening of prison doors reminds us of justice's eventual reach.
The rebel takeover in Syria happening at a key moment in Middle East politics as wars continue in Gaza as well as Lebanon.
That was Poppy Imputing reporting.
Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov has met with his Turkish and Iranian counterparts in Doha.
Moscow says it supports a diplomatic solution to the crisis in Syria.
Syrian opposition leaders have agreed to guarantee the safety of Russian military bases and diplomatic institutions in Syria.
Dasha Chernyshova has more.
The security at the Russian military facilities in Syria that is primarily the main airfield as well as the naval base in TARDIS has been increased and Moscow has reiterated that there is no immediate threat to those facilities but having said that we also have heard some Russian lawmakers saying that at this stage
what is important for Moscow is to make sure that there is security provided for the families of the diplomats inside Syria as well as for the Russian servicemen.
Well indeed we have seen the Russian foreign minister meeting in Doha and there have been many meetings and many statements coming out from there.
So the main idea that we have heard was the urge from the Russian side to preserve the territorial integrity of Syria.
We also have heard that the Asana former has previously agreed to increase the humanitarian aid deliveries to the country.
They have also been speaking about the need to implement revolution 20 to 50 for the UN Security Council and to support the UN efforts to conduct the political set to find the diplomatic solution to the ongoing crisis or the crisis that has been there before.
However it all is unclear how these calls will actually stand now as the situation has drastically changed and Moscow is actually sort of realizing the new realities on the ground is to ensure that there is this smooth transition that will not be put in jeopardy the lives of the civilian population.
That was Dasha Chernyshova reporting coming up.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of Macau's return to China.
Song Manlei is the president of the Court of Final Appeal in the special administrative region, and she says they have made progress in the reforms of judicial practices.
The constitution of the People's Republic of China and the basic law of the Macau special administrative region jointly form the basis of Macau's constitutional system.
The constitution is also effective in Macau.
Of course, when judging cases, it may be more likely to involve the basic law in terms of probability.
Macau courts have implemented the basic law and the administrative region shall exercise their functions and powers independently.
In regard to local laws, such as the general rules on judges, we also have some matching guarantees for judges.
Therefore, I think the basic law and some relevant provisions in Macau, such as the general rules on magistrates, are the best in institutional guarantees for the independent exercise of this judicial power.
So our judges and our three -level courts are able to exercise their judicial power independently of any other individual group, institution, etc.
And I think for 25 years, we've been doing that pretty well.
Song adds that another work of the judges at all levels is to give great recognition to the independent exercise of judicial power by the courts.
She says the legislative assembly and the government and their courts have also done a lot of work to improve Macau's internal legal system.
The president says they've been making continuous improvements in areas such as the criminal law, criminal code, civil code, and the commercial law.

24 minutes past the hour now, South Korean authorities have ordered an overseas travel ban on President Yoon's Suu Kyol.
Police have also not ruled out questioning President Yoon over treason charges related to his short -lived declaration of martial law last week.
Earlier, the main opposition Democratic Party submitted bills to investigate Yoon's alleged insurrection and scandal involving his wife.
It vowed to raise an impeachment motion again.
Jack Barton looks back at Yoon's controversial presidency.
A former South Korean prosecutor general with no political experience.
Yoon's Suu Kyol ran for president pledging to fight corruption and economic inequality and to take a tougher stance on the DPRK.
He won the top job in 2022 with the narrowest margin in the country's history.
During Yoon's conservative rule, Pyongyang has made unprecedented advances with its weapons programs, including new ballistic missiles that can reach the United States, and fast tactical missiles designed to defeat defense systems.
With a reputation for being aloof, Yoon's presidency has been marred by controversies, including meddling in investigations and trying to stifle the media.
In 2022, Yoon was caught cursing on a microphone after a meeting with US President Joe Biden.
Yoon's wife has also been at the center of scandals, including her acceptance of an expensive handbag as a gift and allegations that she manipulated stocks.
Yoon's presidency has been marked by countless demonstrations calling for him to stand down.
And even before martial law was declared, his popularity rating was only around 17 percent.
A public backlash saw the opposition Democratic Party win an overwhelming majority in the National Assembly earlier this year during midterm elections.
He tried to put on a martial law in an attempt to troubleship all this political difficulty.
Yoon is credited with rebuilding economic and security ties with Japan, which were at a postwar low when he came to office.
However, Yoon's presidency will no doubt be remembered most for the introduction of martial law.
That was Jack Barton reporting.

The Shanghai Composite Index closed slightly below flat, while the Shenzhen Component dropped 0 .6%.
Shares in ceramics, oil, and home appliances led the gainers, while those related to the property and aircraft manufacturing sectors saw significant declines.
In Hong Kong, the Hang Seung Index surged 2 .8%.
In Japan, the Nikkei was up 0 .2%.
Meantime, South Korea's KOSPI Index fell more than 2 % to its lowest level since last November.
The index lost more than 1 % last week.
China's Consumer Price Index grew 0 .2 % in November.
The figure was down from the 0 .3 % increase registered in October.
Meantime, the country's producer price index went down 2 .5 % from a year ago, down 0 .4 points compared to the previous months.
For more on the latest economic figures, Pandan spoke with Chiu -Chiang, a fellow at the Belt and Road Research Center of Minzhu University of China.
What's your reading into the just released official figures for the Chinese economy?
A general picture in just one sentence is that the CPI is slightly rising and the PPI is slightly dropping, which shows we're on the minor and warmer recovery path because China is just seeking the minor CPI, which is inflation rise to the target of 2 % of the central bank.
Also, we're trying to lower the cost for the producers because previously the PPI wore the cost for the producers is rising because of the high rising raw materials, energy, oils, and gases, and iron wars, and etc.
Now, I think the market of the cost of the monetary has been coming down, but people are spending continuously.
I think the CPI is not rising as fast as we expected because this is actually an off -season before the Christmas and New Year's Eve holiday season and the spring festival season and people traveling towards the activities have especially been slowing down.
But I think one other good point is that it would help us to raise the CPI numbers is that like the e -commerce is actually been booming continuously, as well as the vehicle industry.
Not only the EV industry, but also we'll be seeing a very unique sign that the traditional vehicles and oil vehicles actually also been expanding their sales in the Chinese domestic market.
So I think this is China boosting Chinese economy, you know, continue to grow in the Q3 and Q4 actually shows another very important, you know, evidence to the world that is China is such a large economy and the resilience is actually a phenomenal economy.
So you can even account for that account on that.
And also I think when the holiday season is approaching, we're going to see a major boost in the CPI numbers and also continuing growth on the GDP.
That was Professor Chu Chiang at Minzhu University of China.
Data shows that China's e -commerce logistics index hit a seven -year high in November, reaching 115 .5 up half of 1 % from the previous month.

Meanwhile, rural e -commerce demand was strong with the sub -index for rural business volume increasing by 2 .3 to 134 .5.
The Federation reported that China's e -commerce logistics enterprises made progress in supply efficiency during the double 11 shopping festival with all sub -indices posting steady improvements.
It also highlighted that the logistics have boosted development of the e -commerce sector with diversified services and efficient operations.
Instant retail is growing fast in China and is easier and quicker for customers to buy what they need, often with fast delivery or even in -store pickup.
Olivia Hu has more.
Undermount retail is quickly becoming a new shopping habit for customers.
It's when you place an order online and then retailers, either directly or through a third -party service, deliver your items right to your door, usually within 30 to 60 minutes.
I recently ordered some fish on a delivery app because I needed it to arrive really fast.
And when I want to send a gift to a friend, like a phone or earphones, I usually just use delivery apps for that too.
Sometimes when I head out, I forget stuff like my contact lenses or phone charger.
If I order online, I'd have to wait two days and I don't have time to go to the store.
Now I just order everything for delivery and within 30 minutes, it's all at my door.
These days, life moves so fast that shopping habits have changed too.
People expect their orders to arrive quickly and efficiently.
Delivery riders who used to deliver just three meals a day are now bringing all sorts of items.
Food, everyday specials, medicine and even electronics.
Now our platform has grown to include five different delivery options.
Dedicated delivery, fast delivery, air and services, self -delivery, and hybrid delivery all to better meet our customers' shopping needs.
As Ontomond, retail has grown with three main models have emerged.
First, the model warehouses and stores are combined.
Second, the model with warehouses set up closer to customers.
