Quince.com slash Radioheadspace. Hi there and welcome to Radioheadspace.
It's Dora here. So there was a time not too long ago when I was feeling stretched a little thin.
You know, that feeling when your calendar looks more like a game of Tetris than a schedule.
That was me. In the middle of all of that, I had gotten an email from someone at work asking if I was willing to jump into a last-minute project.
And it's the kind of project that would have normally lit me up, but instead I just felt heavy.
Old me would have said yes in two seconds flat.
I'd be flattered. grateful to be thought of.
But that day, I paused, took a deep breath, and replied with something simple.
Thanks so much for thinking of me, but I'm at capacity right now, and I won't be able to take this on.
And then I sent it. No over-explaining, no long apology, no maybe if things change next week.
Just, I can't, and that's okay. Then I stared at my screen like I had just sent something scandalous.
Part of me wanted to follow up with a whole paragraph about how I'm still a team player and I still care.
But I didn't. I closed my laptop and made some tea.
Somewhere along the way, a lot of us have learned that no isn't polite unless it comes gift-wrapped in five layers of justification.
We were taught to explain and prove that we've earned our rest.
But the truth is, you don't need to write a TED Talk just to protect your peace.
You're allowed to say no. without guilt, without the whole emotional spreadsheet.
Not because you're being difficult, but because you're being honest.
And that kind of honesty builds trust with yourself and with everyone around you.
I saw this shift happen in my work mentoring mindfulness teachers too.
I remember one of my students saying yes to everything in the beginning, every invitation and every opportunity.
And then one day in our mentorship session, they told me, I finally said no to a teaching request that didn't feel aligned.
And I didn't explain why. I just said no.
I wanted to throw a mini party for them because in that moment, they were stepping into a different kind of being, one rooted in self-trust.
And funny enough, the world didn't fall apart.
The opportunity didn't vanish forever. But what did shift was their energy, their presence, and their joy.
And that showed up in everything else that they said yes to after that.
So today I want to gently remind you, it's okay to say no.
Not out of rebellion, not out of defiance, but out of care.
Care for your energy, your nervous system, your actual capacity.
Saying no doesn't mean you're closed off.
It means you're honoring what's real. And when you do that, your yes becomes so much more powerful.
We all know someone whose boundaries make you feel safe just by being around them.
You never have to second guess their yes.
And over time, you can become that person for others, but especially for yourself.
Because a clear no given with kindness is one of the most generous things that you can offer.
So if something comes your way today and your body's already saying no, listen.
You don't have to explain and you don't have to overperform.
Just be kind, be clear, and be honest. And that's enough.
Actually, that's more than enough. Thanks so much for tuning in today, and I'll see you tomorrow.
