Hello and welcome to Learning English Grammar.
I'm Beth. And I'm Neil. We've just heard George and Sian talking about what's on their to do lists.
That's a list of things you need to do. And that's what this episode is all about.
We'll learn some language you need to talk about your to-do lists, like got to do, need to do and need doing.
And you can read along with this podcast So Neil, what's on your to-do list for today?
Well... I've got lots of things to do today, Beth, but I think the first thing I need to do is make a to-do list.
You don't have one? I don't have one, I need one I love a to-do list.
So every day... I make one at the start of the day and then I feel really good at the end of the day when my to-do list is done.
Okay, I spoke to Sian and George about what's on their to-do lists.
I asked them about things they need to do at work and at home.
Let's listen to what they say and pay attention to the kind of language they use to talk about their to-do lists.
What's on your work to-do list, George? I've got to come up with some TikTok ideas and film those videos and edit them.
And then I've also got to upload some stuff to social media, write some comments, etc.
I've got a plan alive. I'm doing a live lesson tomorrow.
That's on my to-do list. And... Coming up with a new program for YouTube.
Oh, and analysing some statistics. And what about your to-do list for things in general?
I've got a sink full of dishes, so that needs cleaning and I need to do some hoovering.
And I've got to plan my upcoming holiday.
I've got some forms that need filling in, so I'll need to do those.
My children always create chaos. That will need tidying up or I might need to do it.
Wow, they are really busy. They've got lots on their to-do lists.
Now, you may have heard I've got to do, I need to do and something needs doing.
Yes, and here to explain more is Georgie, our resident grammar guru.
Hi, Beth and Neil. I've come to resolve some grammar doubts.
Yes, please. We heard George say he's got to upload some stuff to social media and And he needs to do some hoovering at home.
So why don't we start with those? Sure. Well, got to do something and need to do something mean the same thing.
You can use both of them. Notice how got to is often pronounced gotta when we speak quickly.
OK, so for example, I've got to go shopping.
I've got no food in the house. Right. Another option would be to say, I have to do something.
And these three options have very similar meanings.
Great. Like I have to call my friend because she's coming over at the weekend.
Okay, and then we heard Sian say, I've got some forms that need filling in.
I've got some forms that need filling in, so I'll need to do those.
And George says his sink full of dishes needs cleaning.
I've got a sink full of dishes, so that needs cleaning.
What can you tell us? Right, this is when you want to turn the sentence around so that the task is the subject.
The sink needs cleaning. The forms need filling in.
So you have the task, which is a noun, then need or needs, plus the verb in the ing form.
For example, the shopping needs doing. Yes, and it's needs doing with an S when the subject is singular, like the sink.
So the sink needs cleaning. and need doing without an S when the subject is plural, like the forms.
The forms need filling in. Now we can also use the structure needs to be done, which is the same as needs doing.
So George's sink needs to be cleaned and Sian's forms need to be filled in.
This time the verb is in the past participle form, cleaned and filled in.
So, for example, my car needs to be cleaned because it's really dirty.
Oh, that doesn't sound like fun. Okay, so there seems like there's nothing more that needs doing.
My to-do list is complete. Thanks Georgie.
Bye. Bye. Okay, we're going to play a game.
We'll create some sentences about to-do lists. one word at a time.
You can play this at home with a friend play along to test the difference between need to do and needs doing.
OK, let's try. I have got to go to the shop.
And. By. A. Banana. The. man's trousers need ironing Your work needs to be organised better.
