Headspacethere.Hi, my name's Andy and welcome to RadioHeadspace.
And welcome toMonday, the start of a newweek.
I can mention a couple of weeksback.
A lot of people are having different thoughts as a consequence of being shut away in their homes for long periods oftime.
But what they're going to do in thefuture.
On the otherday, probably about a weekago, I was chatting to afriend.
And he had anidea, but he convinced he was going to take on this sort of new path in his life and hiscareer.
And then when I spoke to him again a couple of daysago, it changed almostcompletely.
And I wondered what wouldhappen.
He hadn't spoken toanyone.
It was sort of more in his own mind how that story had playedout.
And it reminded me of a very specific time back in a monastery that I livedin, where laypeople.
So regularpeople, not monks andnuns, would come and visit and do retreats in themonastery.
During thistime, it was all insilence.
A very strangething, a phenomenon almost you couldsay, would sometimeshappen.
And on the very firstday, the men and women would come in and they'd walk into sort of the meditationhall.
And eveneyes, although youknow, you're not encouraged to sort of look about toomuch, eyes would inevitably look up and occasionally meet with another set ofeyes.
Now, as the monks andnuns, we have the opportunity to speak with theretreatans.
I remember one particularchap, and I spoke to him after a few days of being inretreat.
And he told mehow, on the very firstday, he had locked eyes with thisgirl, with thiswoman, who was on theretreat.
He couldn't stop thinking abouther.
He found himself throughout his days ofmeditation, just thinking about thisgirl.
Every time he went back to the meditationhall, he would just lookup.
She wouldn't always necessarily be lookingback, but he would start to sort of create this story in hismind, where they might potentially go in thefuture.
So in hismind, he was building up this storyof, well, youknow, we both intomeditation, maybe kind of we get on really well and he looks like my kind of person and we could have thisrelationship.
And it continued in thisway.
So when I met with himfor, Ithink, five days into theretreat, we had a similarconversation, and he talked about how this hadcontinued.
They'd gone waybeyond, way past firstdate, and in hismind, they had gotmarried, they'd hadchildren.
The marriage had even fallen into some sort of state ofdisrepair.
They were considering divorce in hismind, and it's incredible to think that when we are in charge of thenarrative, even when we are choosing where we take ourthoughts, even then we can paint a darkpicture.
I don'tknow, I've remembered that story just because I always surprises me how we can take just such an innocent thing that may happen in ourlife.
Something sosmall, sofleeting, and yet we take it away and we create a story out ofit.
Sometimes the story'sgood, sometimes the story'sbad.
But it's a story of something that hasn'texisted, it hasn't takenplace, and yet in ourmind, we've taken it to a stage where it can actually cause us a real sense of discomfort or harm in someway.
So as you head into theday, as you head into thisweek, just noticing when those littlethoughts, those innocent little moments in lifearise, not allowing them to spin out to become something bigger in themind, but instead seeing it clearly and letting itgo.
Thanks for listeningtoday, I look forward to seeing you back heretomorrow.
