Hi, my name is Andy and welcome to Radio Headspace and to Fridaymorning.
As you practice meditation onmindfulness, I'm assuming that you do in someway.
You maynot. You may just tune into radioheadspace.
He's David assuming that you do some kind of practice likethat.
I think there is a tendency to add another layer on top ofthat.
That's the tendency to try and live a certainway.
So the most basic level with simply cultivating awareness andcompassion.
But I think that comes with addedstuff.
Maybe we think we need to dress a certain way or we need to eat a certain way or we need to like certain types of things and not like otherthings.
And I think that can be reallyunhelpful.
Actually, I think you can really start to shrink the world we live in and actually limit the world we livein.
The idea of awareness is not that we shut thingsout.
It's more that we open up that we see things clearly and in seeing them moreclearly, we start to understand what'shelpful, what'sunhelpful.
I was reminded this by a teacher ofmine, teacher from quite a while back who trained himself at that samemonastery.
And he had just come out of a very longretreat.
He'd been in there for about four years and he had about a month or six weeks before going back in for another fouryears, which is a long stretch by anyone'sstandards.
Anyway, he was invited over to theAbbots' plotage on thecampus.
And on that particularweekend, there were a number of visiting lamas to bet and teachers who werethere.
And forthem, it was a Saturdayafternoon.
They wererelaxing, they were enjoying their companytogether.
This friend sort of walked in there and he said to hisamazement, I don't know if it was theterminator, it was something like the terminator was playing on theTV.
There was an actionmovie, a Hollywood actionmovie.
And there was all kinds of things going on init.
And he said it took him a long time to sort of wrap his head aroundone, the nature of themovie, they werewatching, but also they were even watching TV atall.
And I would have felt exactly the same put in that situation backthen.
I think that we tend to have an idea that in choosing to cultivateawareness, compassion, we are at the same time saying no to a lot of things inlife.
And obviously within a monasticcontext, don't get mewrong.
And not seeing around watching videos all the time is just for them a special occasion and a time to sort ofrelax.
And also they spent decades intraining.
So I think it wasokay.Anyway, I think there is this tendency to try and live in a certainway.
And I even find myself people will naturally assume that I read a certain type of book because I teachmeditation.
And when I say I really like spider-y-lose fromRussia, they'relike, what?
Soagain, is can we have a mind that is open toeverything, that isunbiased, that is not necessarily trying to live a certain way or trying to be a certain kind ofperson.
But he's much bigger thanthat, as much richer thanthat.
It's a framework that allows us to see what'shelpful, what'sunhelpful.
But within that we can enjoylife.
There's a sense of knowing what makes ushappy, what brings us a sense ofjoy.
And how can we best bring that sense of happiness and joy to others in ourlife?
So whatever you've got planned for theweekend, I hope you enjoyit.
Thanks for listeningtoday.
