How is micro-feminism helping women combat workplace sexism?
Thanks for asking.
To all our female listeners, have you ever been a victim of misogyny in the workplace?
Sadly, the chances are you have, given that a 2022 survey by recruitment agency Randstad found that 72 of women have encountered inappropriate behavior from male colleagues, while 67 had experienced some form of gender discrimination.
But there are some simple everyday actions that can help us to counter sexism at work.
And social media has recently been rife with discussion of these so-called micro-feminist acts.
Okay.
So the trend really began taking off when American producer and host Ashley Cheney posted a clip on TikTok in late March 2024 talking about a couple of her own favorite examples of microfeminism.
Here's the first one.
When I send an email, let's say, to a CEO and you have to copy their assistant for scheduling purposes, if the assistant is a female, I will always in the email to line.
I will always enter their email address before the CEO's.
Of course, such a simple act might seem pretty minor at first and unlikely to make a real impact.
But, as explained by Fast Company, when you add up all these seemingly insignificant acts, the effect is actually massive.
Now let's take a listen to Ashley Cheney's other favourite micro-feminist tactic.
If I'm emailing a team, I will always address the woman first in the actual emails.
Well, as a subject, it clearly struck a chord with a huge number of women.
At the time of recording, Chaney's original post had been liked over 285,000 times.
The comments section quickly filled up with praise and other female users talking about their own personal ways of taking micro-feminist action at work.
For example, Wanda said, Mine is at the preschool I work at.
I always call the dads first when kids are sick and the mums for billing questions.
While YogaFlower99 said, I write real estate contracts and I always put the wife's name first.
It's fair to say that microfeminism isn't totally new, but going viral on TikTok has helped put a name on the type of action that many women were taking at work already.
The trend really underscores the importance of collective action and brings attention to small gestures like those I've been talking about.
By sharing their experiences on platforms like TikTok, women can find support and inspire others.
Talking to Glamourcom about micro feminism, Ashley Chaney said I think it's just really beautiful for people to have a name for it and to be inspired to continue or to start supporting women in these tiny, tiny little ways that are actionable and that don't include petitioning and running for Congress or something that takes a huge amount of action.
If you're keen to integrate micro-feminism into your day-to-day work life, don't hesitate to check out the many TikTok videos on the subject and see which gestures inspire you the most.
