Cody, wanna hear a story?
Yes, I do.
Can I please help tell it, too?
Yes, listen close.
Let's imagine and rhyme.
It's Cocomelon Storytime!
Huh.
What's going on, Cody?
Weren't you about to go play at JJ's house?
I was, but I'm not sure I feel like playing right now.
Is that bad?
No, of course it's not bad, son.
It's just how you feel.
This reminds me of a story inspired by a folk tale from Mexico.
It's called Mana Fox y Mano Coyote.
A long time ago in the desert, there lived Sister Fox, or Mana Fox as she's called.
Mana Fox?
Mana is short for hermana, which means sister in Spanish.
Now on this day, the sun climbed high, the hot air was dry, and the tumbleweeds were rolling by.
Crouch.
Mana Fox wanted a snack, but Brother Coyote, or Mano Coyote, trotted up to her.
Tup, tup, tup, tup.
Mano Coyote pounced in front of Mana Fox and yelled, Yep, yep, Coyote, I want to play.
Mana Fox didn't feel like playing.
She wanted her snack, but she also didn't want to tell Mano Coyote no.
That's how I feel, too.
What did she do?
She said, Mano Coyote, I would like to play with you.
Yip-yay!
It's the perfect time to play.
The sun is out and shining bright, so we can play until it's night.
But before we can play, all this sand must be swept away.
All the sand in the whole desert?
That sounds impossible.
That's what Mono Coyote thought too.
But since he wanted to play with Mono Fox, he said if that's what it takes to play with you, See what I can do.
Mono Coyote grabbed a tumbleweed and stuck it onto a stick.
Crunch.
Now he had a broom.
And so Mono Coyote swept, swept, swept the desert sand.
Swish, swish, swish.
But there's so much sand.
Mono Coyote will never be done.
That sounds like a trick.
It was a trick.
Mono Fox didn't like how she felt about it either.
I know it's a trick.
But I had to think quick.
I just didn't know what to say.
Maybe later I'll feel ready to play.
Sure enough, Mana Fox's trick gave her enough time to find some fresh cactus fruit near the waterfall and eat her snack.
Munch, munch, munch.
Suddenly, Mana Fox heard a familiar voice.
Yip, yip, kay-yay!
I want to play soon.
We can play all day till we see the moon.
Mana Coyote said, But did Mana Fox feel ready to play yet, Daddy?
Not really.
Mana Fox said Mano Coyote, I would like to play with you, but before we can get going um, this waterfall must stop flowing.
Stop a whole waterfall from flowing?
That sounds even more impossible.
Right?
But Mano Coyote said, if that's what it takes to play with you, Let me see what I can do.
Mono Coyote wasn't sure he could stop every drop, but he sat in the river with a plop.
Maybe if I just push my paws against the waterfall like this.
But it just made him all wet.
It sounds like Mana Fox tricked Mono Coyote again.
She did.
I know it's a trick, but I had to think quick.
I just didn't know what to say.
Maybe later I'll... ready to play?
Right after I take a nap.
And so, Mana Fox curled up to snooze.
But she slept for a really long time.
When she woke up, it was already dark.
Mana Fox realized she was too late.
I ate and I napped so I'm ready for fun.
But the sun has set and the day is done.
Mana Fox raced back to the waterfall and found Mano Coyote scooping up water with his paws, splashing it back up the falls with his tail and trying so very hard to do what she had asked him to.
She called out, Mano Coyote, Yip Yip Coyay, I have something to say.
Hey, Mana Fox, how's it going?
Can you believe this water's still flowing?
Come here, Mono Coyote.
Mono Fox gave him a hug and dried Coyote off with her bushy fox tail.
The truth is, I didn't really want to play.
But I thought saying that would make you sad.
So I tricked you and made up something else for you to do instead.
I'm sorry.
Mono Coyote gave Mono Fox a hug and said, Yep, yep, Coyote.
If you didn't want to play, then that's all you had to say.
I'd understand.
Sometimes I don't feel like playing either.
She can just tell the truth, and I can do that too.
I'll tell JJ I don't feel like playing today.
I think that's a great idea, Cody.
Just then, Mama Fox had an idea.
She said, hey, Mama Coyote, yep, yep, Coyote, tomorrow's a brand new day.
When the sun rises, do you want to play?
Aw.
Yep, yep, yahoo!
Mana Fox, I'd love to.
Yay, they're going to play together.
The end.
Hold on, Cody.
Since this is a story from Mexico, we ended with something special.
Colorín colorado, este cuento se ha acabado.
What does that mean?
It means this story is all done.
Let's try saying it together now.
Y colorín colorado este cuento se ha acabado.
We heard a story.
Yes, it's true.
And I helped tell it, too.
We listened, imagined, and made some rhymes for Cocomelon Storytime.
