Hi, it's me, your host, Dora.
Welcome back to Radio Headspace and to Wednesday.
Today, we're exploring the wisdom of sadness.
When I think about sadness, I'm reminded of how transformative deep despair can be.
Sadness can serve as a way to awaken compassion in ourselves and others.
So here's a story about Buddha and a mustard seed that reflects this truth.
But before I share this story, I do want to acknowledge that this story discusses child loss.
So for listeners sensitive to this topic, please listen at your own discretion.
So during Buddha's time, there lived a woman named Kisa Gotami.
She married young and gave birth to a son.
One day, the baby fell sick and passed away soon after.
Kisa loved her son greatly and refused to believe that her son was dead.
She carried the body of her son around her village, asking if there was anyone who could bring her son back to life.
A village elder took pity on her and said, Kisa, we cannot help you, but you should go to the Buddha.
So she immediately went to the Buddha's residence and pleaded for him to bring her son back to life.
Kisa, I have a way to bring your son back to life.
My Lord, I will do anything to bring my son back.
If that is the case, then I need you to find me something.
Bring me a mustard seed, but it must be taken from a house where no one residing has ever lost a family member.
Bring this seed back to me and your son will come back to life.
Kisa went from house to house trying to find the mustard seed, but the answer was all the same.
Every house had lost a family member.
Kisa finally came to realize that there's no one in the world who had never lost a family member to death.
She now understood that death is inevitable and a natural part of life.
Now we don't have to go door to door asking people if they've ever experienced sadness.
I think we can all assume that all beings everywhere have.
And when we have that sense of connectedness, the sadness doesn't seem as heavy.
The weight is shared amongst all of us.
How we carry it is also just as important.
When we're able to approach it with a sense of mindfulness and compassion, we can break free from its grips and learn to be in harmony with it, as if it's a lifelong friend.
Or in the words of spiritual teacher Ramdas, you can carry it like it's a great weight, or you can do it like it's all a part of the dance.
And I also want to stress that reframing our relationship to sadness takes time.
It won't change overnight.
Change happens in those moments when we start to respond differently.
So that's all for today.
And if you'd like to share your thoughts with me about this episode, be sure to find me on Instagram at Dora Kamau.
