What are the secrets to a long -lasting relationship?
Thanks for asking! According to the Daily Mail, the 7 -year itch in relationships is now a thing of the past. A UK survey from 2014 found that the average relationship length is just 2 years and 9 months.
Since the late 20th century, long -lasting relationships have tended to be the exception rather than the norm.
It's a trend that has fascinated researchers with many carrying out studies in search of the secrets behind a lasting relationship.
Across the pond in the US Dr. John Gottman is a renowned expert on marital stability and divorce prediction.
He opened a laboratory for observing couples at the University of Washington in 1986 which the media dubbed the Love Lab.
In 1992 Gottman and two colleagues carried out a series of interviews with 52 heterosexual married couples.
The researchers then attempted to predict whether the couples would still be together three years later or not.
As it turned out they recorded an impressive 94 % success rate with their predictions.
Determining qualities within a solid relationship included expressions of fondness between partners, expressions of positivity or happiness in the marriage, and what Gottman called we -ness.
That refers to partners seeing themselves as part of a team rather than focusing on their individual experience when talking about the story of their relationship.
What about physical signs of affection?
A study published in Personal Relationships Journal in 2020 found that the proportion of couples that stay in love, even after many years of marriage, is a lot higher than what we might think.
Even couples who hadn't had sex for months, said they still loved one another deeply.
Affectionate behaviour like hugging and kissing was commonplace in those relationships.
Such gestures strengthen the bond between partners by releasing oxytocin, also known as the love hormone.
Having admiration for our partner and their positive qualities also makes love more intense.
The personal relationships study showed that having a positive view of one's partner is a cornerstone for a strong relationship.
From observing thousands of couples arguing in his lab, John Gottman identified certain negative communication patterns that were reliable factors in predicting divorce.
He called them the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, criticism, contempt, defensiveness, and stonewalling.
And contempt is seen as the most destructive of the four because it makes the target feel worthless and makes it impossible to build connection.
