Hello, it's Dora. Happy Friday and welcome back to radio headspace.
Today, I wanted to talk about what it means to be embodied.
That is to inhabit and be fully present in our bodies.
Many of us spend most days living outside of our bodies for a plethora of reasons.
Some of us live on autopilot, and for others, living in our bodies may just be difficult and challenging.
Whoever you may find yourself on this spectrum, my hope today is simply to plant a seed.
Something free to think about when it comes to living life, awake, and aware.
Over the holidays, I had the opportunity to attend a Buddhist retreat in Costa Rica.
The theme of the retreat was embodiment and what it means to connect to the wisdom and innate intelligence of our bodies.
In one of our Dharma Reflection Talks, our teacher spraying was sharing his suta or story of Buddha, and this mystical creature called Rakeshana, who was traveling around the world for thousands of years, searching for enlightenment.
As he was journeying through the world, trying to search for this truth, he bumped into Buddha and asked him for help.
How can I find this enlightenment?
The Buddha gently replied that enlightenment is found, going within, and being in our bodies.
What stands out to me in this story is the simplicity in the Buddha's response.
By inhabiting our bodies, we can awaken to our own wisdom.
So, even now, as I'm telling this story, check in and just notice, how are the muscles in your face, in your shoulders, in your arms, and in your legs.
See if you can soften that tension and create a sense of ease in the body, by taking a few deep breaths.
Awareness of our bodies allows us to be living, walking, breathing meditations.
I think it's one thing to know about meditation, to read hundreds of books, attend numerous trainings, and to make sense of it intellectually, but integrating these ideas into our physical selves is a whole different experience.
This is one way we can learn to be more at home in our bodies, and inhabit these earth suits.
If you're looking for more support with being embodied, head over to the Headspace app to try out the body scan meditation.
Body scans are a great start to help with being more present in our bodies.
That's all for today. As always, thank you so much for listening, and I'll see you next week.
