Can you understand fast English?
Nobody wanted to work in your department because it's not actual fashion.
So I just like got it.
Isn't that cool, fairy.
Today we are going to test your comprehension of fast english, and we're going to do that with a scene from the devil wears prada 2.
By the way, if you like this movie, definitely check out my shadowing video of the devil wears prada 1.
It was a lot of fun, but now we are going to focus on listening, And first we are going to listen to the full clip.
Then I'm going to ask you a few comprehension questions.
It's going to be really quick.
So let's see if you got all the information right.
Then we're going to listen to it again and then you'll have to transcribe specific parts.
Well, you won't actually have to transcribe it, but we'll do a quick fill in the blanks exercise to see if you got all the words, not just the meaning.
And then we'll listen to it again.
We'll slow down and we'll uncover together all the words.
And if needed, we might even repeat it together.
OK, so are you ready?
You can also get a pen and a paper.
Close the door and let's get started.
But before that, if you're new to me, then hi, my name is Hadar.

Shadowing and listening exercises are a huge part of the work that I do.
I come from a theater background and I feel like Shadowing and repeating other people's voices is a great way to understand the rhythm, intonation and stress of the language.

I'm going to play the clip at regular speed and then I'm going to ask you some comprehension questions.
Are you Andy?
Yes.
Hi, I'm Jin Chow.
I'm your new assistant.
Cool, I was wondering about that.
Nice to meet you.
I was an intern this morning, but when a desk opens up, the interns get a chance to interview.
And guess what?
Nobody wanted to work in your department because it's not actual fashion.
So I just, like, got it.
Isn't that cool?
Very.
You don't want me.
I didn't say that.
If you don't want me, you can interview someone else.
That's totally fine.
I did go to Yale, 386 GPA, lead soprano of the whiff and poof.
So my ACT score was 36 on the very first try.
You know what?
You seem great.
I'm happy to have you.
Great.
Okay, great.
All right.
Take a deep breath, and let's see if you can answer these questions.
Question one.
What position did Jin have before she got this job?
She was an intern.
I was an intern this morning but when a desk opens up the interns get a chance to interview.
Question two.

So ACT scores range from 1 to 36, so she got the top score.
All right, if you didn't get all of the answers, don't feel bad.
Honestly, I didn't get all of it when I listened to it for the first time, okay?
So you are in good company.
But now let's break down the areas that might have felt a little less clear.
I'm going to play it part by part by part and I'm going to show you the sentence with one word or phrase taken out, and you will have to say it out loud or see if you got it.
Okay, let's get started.
Are you andy, are you andy?
Are you andy, Are you Andy?
Yes.

3.86 GPA.
Lead soprano of the whiff and poof.
So my ACT score was 36 on the very first.
Hi.
All right, if you didn't get this one, it's okay.
This was the fastest and the hardest to understand.
So let's play it again and then I'll help you fill in the blanks.
3.86 GPA leads the print of the with and poof.
So my ACT score was 36 on the very first time.
All right, 3.86 GPA.
Lead soprano of the Whiffin' Poofs in my ACT score was 36 on the very first try.
By the way, the Whiffin' Poofs is an acapella singing group at Yale.
Just so you know.
I didn't know that before.
Okay.
And the last sentence.
You know what?
You seem great.

Great.
Okay.
Great.
Okay.
Okay.
Very good.
Now, just to tie it nicely with a bow, we are going to shadow it.
So, we're going to play line by line and we're going to say it together.
If you need to, you can slow down, okay?
But the best way to improve your comprehension and listening is through your mouth.
It's also a good pronunciation practice.
We're getting you ready to watch this movie, okay?
Let's start.
Are you Andy?
Are you Andy?
Are you Andy?
Are you Andy?
Pitch going up.
Yes.
Yes.
Yes.
Hi, I'm Jin Chow.
I'm your new assistant.
Hi, I'm Jin Chow.
I'm your new assistant.
Hi, I'm Jin Chao.
I'm your new assistant.
Assistant.
Do that little lift at the end.
Cool, I was wondering about that.
Nice to meet you.
Cool, cool, cool.
I was wondering about that.
Nice to meet you.
When people are excited or they want to be overly friendly, a lot of times they go into their head voice the falsetto.
Hey, so cool.
I was wondering about that.
This is what she does here.
Cool.
I was wondering about that.
Nice to meet you.
Next.
I was an intern this morning, but when a desk opens up, the interns get a chance to interview.
And guess what?
So let's break it phrase by phrase.
I was an intern this morning.
I was an intern this morning.
I was an intern this morning.
I was an intern this morning.
When a desk opens up, the interns get a chance to interview.
But uh, when a desk opens up, the interns get a chance to interview.
The interns get a chance to interview and guess what, and guess what, and guess what.
Play with your voice.
This is a really great exercise to vary your intonation and get you a little uncomfortable with your voice.
It's not a bad thing.
All right, next part.
So I just like, got it.
Isn't that cool?
So I just like, got it.
Isn't that cool?
So I just like, got it.
Isn't that cool?
Isn't that cool?
There's that little lift at the beginning that I really like.
Isn't that cool?
And?
Very.
Very.
Very.
You don't really know what she is thinking and feeling here.
Very.
I don't know.
Why are you telling me this?
Right?
And that is like the tone of voice here.
You don't want me.
You don't want me.
You don't want me.
You don't want me.
You don't want me.
You don't want me.
Notice how everything connects.
You don't, you don't, you don't.
The D becomes like a flap.
Want, the T blends in with the N. You don't want me.
And Andy says, I didn't say that.
I didn't say that.
I didn't say that.
Look at how wide the range of the pitch is here.
I didn't say that.
There are a lot of lifts.
I didn't say that.
Free your voice.
Don't push your voice when you're trying this.
If you don't want me, you can interview someone else.
If you don't want me, you can interview someone else.
If you don't want me, want again, you don't pronounce the T. It's like a healthy.
If you don't want me, you can stress on can because it's not a must.
She's not obligated to her.
You can interview.
T is dropped.
Interview someone else.
That's totally fine.
That's totally fine.
That's totally fine.
The consonants are very soft here.
That's totally fine.
I don't.
I don't.
I don't.
I don't.
I don't.
I don't.
Something else is coming up, but she stops her.
I did go to Yale.
3.86 GPA.
Lead soprano of the with and poof.
So my ACT score was 36 on the very first.
Hi.
Okay.
We're going to do it slowly.
I did go to Yale 386 GPA, lead soprano of the Whiff and Poofs and my ACT score was 36 on the very first try.
That's what she does, right?
Flat, flat, flat, flat, flat, trying to get in a lot of information really quickly.
And Now you're going to try it again.
I did go to Yale, 386 GPA, lead soprano of the whiff and poof.
So my ACT score was 36 on the very first try.
You know what?
You seem great.
I'm happy to have you.
You know what?
You know what?
It was so quick.

Tone of voice is more matter of fact.
I'm happy to have you.
And?
Great, okay, great, okay.
Great, okay, great.
Back to high pitch.
Ooh, that was fun.
We played with a pitch.
